CRICKET.
NEW CLUB FORMED,
OTAGO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS.
A large and enthusiastic meeting of students of the Otago University was held in the men’s common room at the University last night. Mr P. S. de Q. Cabot, who presided, explained that the object of the meeting was to consider the advisability of forming a University cricket club.
Several speakers addressed the meeting and expressed the opinion that a cricket mb would prove, an asset to the Students’ Association, and would certainly tend to stimulate interest in dub matches in Dunedin, as such a club would be sure to secure a large following. It was suggested that, in addition to the club matches, games could be arranged with the other universities at Easter time in conjunction with the tournament and the annual fixture with Canterbury College would prove more interesting. On* the motion of Mr C, ’Simmers, it was resolved to form a University cricket dub, there being no dissent. The following office-bearers were then elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr T. K. Sidey (Deader of the Legislative Council) ; president, Mr P, S. de Q Cabot; vice-presidents—Dr E. N. Meirington, Professor T. Adams, Colonel Strong, Messrs A. C. Hanlon, and G. W Reid; dub captain, Mr A. W. Sinclair; secretary and treasurer, Mi G. 5L O’Kane; committee—Messrs C. Simmers, J. Gilklson, and P. M. Hanan.
In thanking members for his election, the president said that about 15 members who had played senior cricke> in Dunedin and other centres had signified their willingness and were very keen to play for the club. He went on to speak oi the necessity for enlarging the membership of the dub, and said the present members could help best by in*7odueing players who bad been nut of the game since coming to the University, and also ex-stndents and graduates who were be-' coming out of touch with University life. He hoped that the club wonld be admitted to senior cricket, a? it would gain greater support than otherwise.
The meeting passed a strong recommendation to the committee lhat application should be made to the Otago Cricket Association for affiliation, and teams should be entered in the grade competitions, as many players were resident in Dunedin, and would not be away during the vacation; and, further, as the membership wonld include graduates and exstudents.
It was also recommended that matches should be arranged with country teams for those players who would be available for only a few months. -
Before the close of the meeting about 30 members were enrolled.
