RUGBY FOOTBALL: REFEREES’ DECISIONS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sie, —Allow me to uphold what “Fair Play” writes in today’s issue. Aa a -visitor- to your city, I have been some what amazed the decisions of the referees in the last two matches. In the University-Kaikorai game, knock-ons and knocks-forward that went uapenalised will, in this writer's opinion, get the players into a very had habit when they meet provincial sides with outside referees. As “Fair Play” states, the penalties against Southland were at times hard to explain. Especially was this so when Otago invariably received a free kick when the visitors were almost over the line. It was obvious that the game was at times played with a certain amount of heat, and in view of some of the unaccountable decisions meted out against Southland, this was only to bp expected. ’ As one who was interested in neither team particularly, I was disappointed- in the display, but am of the opinion that Southland was clearly the better team on the day.—l, am, etc., Canterbury.
