Ransom) said he understood from his reports that the position was getting better. He knew the poisition was improved in the country. , The figures showed that the position was not so serious as it was several months ago. A complaint was made that the Government was putting men off. The Minister said that so far as the Public Works Department was concerned the only mtn put off were those on works that were finished. He hoped to be able to announce in the near future that the Government was arranging for men to he employed on, work ol a more productive nature than road work. By speeding up certain programmes he was able to put 150 men on road work near Taumarunui right away. He would like the men to be carefully selected and the most deserving sent. He was informed that men had left work in the country to come into town, taking relief work. That sort of thing must be stopped.
