OTAGO RUGBY UNION.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr W. Brown) occupied the chair, Mr D. M. Stuart welcomed Mr Brown, who .had been laid aside with illness’ for some weeks, back to the committee meetings. A number of applications were received for the use of grounds for-“house” matches on Saturday.—The applications were referred to the ■ Flag .Committee to arrange; the games to bo concluded by 3 o’clock, ■ ~ ’ It was decided to play .the match between senior teams from, tbe Otago., and Southland primary schools as a curtainraiser to the charity, match on, Saturday. The annual . match - between tbe : Gore High School first fifteen and the Otago Boys’ High School second fifteen was played, at Gore yesterday in perfect weather. The game was fast and open, and at times exciting, and ended in a win for Otago by six points to three. The Gore forwards had . the advantage -in height, but_ the visiting pack ; had' the better of the line-out-play,’ especially in the second half, when- the Otago backs were well served with the ball. Gore, defended well, but bad no finish to its movements; In the first half Jolly scored-aa the result of a combined passing rush in. which all tbe backs took part. Ruff just failed to convert with a good kick. In ;the second half Gore made some determined .attacks, in which rapid 1 passing by the backs was a feature. AUCKLAND, August 19. , A strong’ protest against the Canterbury Rugby-Union’s request for an outside referee for the Capterbury-Auckland match, on-August 31 wag entered at -a meeting of the -Auckland Referees’ Association to-night. It was taken as: an affront to, Auckland,,referees, and a member characterised the request as an action by the New. Zealand Union to hold a pistol to the, heads of -the Auckland referees. . There , was a feeling, that the Auckland Management' Committee had not supported the referees, and a- deputation was appointed, to, bring a resolution before’ the committee protesting' against any action debarring Auckland referees fromrepresentative - matches and expressing an intention to reconsider the decision to abide .by. the Auckland- rules if support’ was not forthcoming.
