: -r-On’-a.; table in a German railway coach is a device which is unique in Europe. ' There-is a revolving roll of paper, on which . needles trace various lines when the .train is in motion. One records any difference in the distance between the’two rails, another any difference in their-height,-a third deals with curves, a fourth with unevenness in the rail joinings, and a fifth with the train’s speed. When the journey is completed the roll is cut up and- the ■ parts sent - to the controlling engineers in the various districts, who can, then see at a glance where any weakness lies.. It is considered that this system will add greatly to the safety of railway travelling. ■ —The height- at which large hailstones begin to form- is between 15,000 ft and 40,000 ft above the ground.
