M'Carten will again.pilot Limerick ip '.the spring engagements, and when available he will also be on the other horses in. Jones’s care. Mangani is one of the fancied horses in Auckland for the Grand National Hurdles. He is a dasMng jumper,, with good staying credentials, and he looks in great order for this week’s engagements.. Home Made, who has gone' to Australia, was the only horse who failed to make the finai payment in the Grand National Hurdles. The 15 who remain in make up a good field, but some of them are likely to be troubled by the length of the journey.

The Winter Cup looks like being a’great race: The defection of Lady Limoncf was a disappointment and probably means that this smart marc has gbno wrong. The other four to "di;op out, Solrose, Cireultion. Evening, and Haze, had not been seriously discussed. There, are 20 horses in the field and they are a good lot, without being high class. Grand Song and Desert Song, raced well in the Maiden. Stakes at the Christchurch Hunt; meeting,.: and both:, will, be seen in much more important roles later in the reason. Their sire,' Hunting Song, is expected to found a new line of stayers, and as this is. a great need, in the Dominion at present,, the' form*, of his ‘ three-year-olds this season will attract special attention. Limerick and Mollison will meet in the "Warwick Farm Slakes on August 31, and the meeting of the two champions is certain to attract much interest to the meeting, quite. apart from the other good races billed. Mollison and Limerick have met only , once, when the former captured the mile All-aged Stakes from the New Zealand champion" in the: spring. On that occasion the going was so sloppy, that some racegoers may not have been; satisfied as to Mollison’s superiority, but the question. should Am set at rest when the two meet over a similar journey at Warwick Farm. Aussie is . another solid nailer, likely to be in the field. Mr R. Roberta, part-ownerof the Wui-. kato (New Zealand) /galloper; Paganelli, which he has brought to Sydney, was a prominent. inside-back of New Zealand Rugby a few years ago '(says"the Australian Referee). He .captained the 1004 New Zealand team which beat Australia in the testAin. Australia;. £-0, ~17-40, 22—7,. playing centre-three-quarter, After the war he toured; with the Nbw. Zealand Army team, which,: Under the captaincy’of Jimmy Ryan,. 6£“. Petohe (Wellington) ■won the KmfeV Cup; Ms J. Carroll/ trainer of Paganelli, who is also, bn, this - side at present, was selected to ,tbiij: with the 1914 team refrred to; but could not travel. Carroll was. a good forward in the days before the.war,, having- played for'North Island in addition .to bis -province./' •By his victory in the,Austrian:.Grand Prix, Oleander brought his total winnings, up to £21,950, the Highest amount ever; reached by„a Germaii- racehorse.; "Fervoi; held the record with - £21,630. Pels and Dolmit each -won Over £20,000. “ /In his" early days, who was purchased at a-moderate price, was not considered to be a. racehorse of class. /, Odds of -2 to 1 were laid on-lurk/in’ the Austrian race. There were eight.; starters, The French horse, Castel Sardo, was not among the first five-to finish. -

Front' the. time racing was resumed at Epsom in 1919—the war having ended the previous November—Lord As tor’s representatives have, riin second-for the ’Derby on four occasions.; Buchan being the runnerup in that year ‘to’ Grand. Parade.- while in 1921 his Two, Thousand .urinner,, Craig an'Eran, got beaten a neck by Humorist, a good horse, ;by Polymelus that /.died shortly afterwards. In ’1922 Tamar whs second 1 , easily defeated by Captain Cuttle, 1 as was/ St. Germans, by Sansovino, two years '.later;" but in the iOaiks', * his lordship’s ■ fortune has been jnst ; the reverse. In recent years he has, won - the ladies’ race 1 with Progroin, Saucy / Sue,’ Short Story, and (this year) Pennycomequick, ■while Book - Law’ was ‘ unluckily beaten a head-in 1927. Pennycomequick is described by English Turf writers as a magnificent filly, having-great' power and quality. She is by Hurry On out of Plyrastock, by Polymelus from the Thousand Guineas winner -of 1910, Winkipop, by that great staying son-of 'St.' Simon, William the Third. • Beaupreau, winner of the Austrian Derby, run at Vienna on 'June,2, was bred in'Hugary. The distance was the classic one of one mile and a-hal£,'and the race was worth 40,000 Austrian schillings. Beaupreau scored by five-lengths, and he is a son of Pazman, a stallion by Pardon out of.Patrie, by Gaga from. Patience, by Bona Vista. His dam, Bocula, brings'in s close double cross of Bona Vista, as, ,bred by the Baron Springer, she is by the Chantilly Derby winner, Dagor. out of Bobalka, a daughter of Bona Vista, who comes from No. 23 family. Bona Vista was the sire of Cyllene, whose line is, : sb strongly represented in Australia' Bona Vista was by B.end Or from' Vista.

The Geraldine Cup will carry a cash prize of 200sovs, with the addition of a silver cup valued at 25sovs. The Geraldine Racing Club is offering special inducements to ’ owners, to ■ patronise the meeting next month. HTie club will pay inwdrd railway freight on all horses competing at the. meeting, leaving owners to defray only the half tare of the return journey. Valparaiso, who ran Limerick to a long head for first honours, n.the decision of .the King’s Cup at Rahdwick on April 14, 1928, appears to;be New South Wales’s chief hope for the same- race to be run at Brisbane this week, - When Valparaiso fought out the finish with Limerick the latter, who carried 9.5, was conceding his rival 281 b. Valparaiso is weighted st 8.6 ill connection with .the King’s Cup at Brisbane, so that .although he will; not encounterVanother Limerick a rise of 15lb will probably necessitate the reproduction of his best form if he is to lead the field, home. - ’

By Sentinel, .The Metropolitan meeting will be con-tinued-on Wednesday and concluded on Friday. Zella,,who was a starter in the Trial Handicap at Addington on Saturday, is a six-year-old mare by Hula Dillon from Fair .Puritan. She has done most of her racing jn the North Island, but she is now one of J. Bryce’s team. The . American-bred stallion Brigand, by Belwin . (son of M'Kinney), from Lisettai. May, has been retired from the race track and will stand the season at Mr J. Lorgelly’s farm, New Brighton. During a visit to Australia, recently M. B. Edwards secured two additions to his team; and they are now quartered in the Yaldhurst stables (says the Press). One is a five-year-old gelding by Adonis from May Highwood, and therefore a halfbrother to a good performer in Delavan's Quest, raced in New Zealand by P. Riddle. This gelding has no performances. The other is the eight-year-old gelding. Mat Voyage, by First Voyage, and has a mile and a-ha)f record of -3.46 against him. , Dundas Boy was the unlucky horse in the August Handicap, and, with a good beginning,, be would have, been closer t’o the winner. ''' Wilma Dillon has been shaping well on the -tracks, and he will be started on at least, one of the days at the Addington meeting. ■ . W. J. ■ Tomkinsbn has transferred his lease of Glideaway to Mr G. J. Barton, and, the mare; will race in the Dunedin sportsman’s interest from now on.

Not content, with, robbing the trotting; sport of four metropolitan dates, the Victorian Cabinet has made the reduction 'retrospective (says a. Melbourne writer).The- dates are allotted , frpm April 1 each year, which means that already six of the 16 meetings have been disposed of. Some day'trotting men will get red in the: face and; thus show the authorities that they are really angry. J Tis'better to be born poor than to own la trotter. .The most successful stake winner in Perth ' this season is Willowcliffe, the' State’s, champion . tliree-year-old, who netted- £BBI. for his owners. Messrs F. W. Godecke and W. P. Baker* the breeders of the colt. ; Ci, J. Clarke'has had Willowcliffe oh lease'since-June last year: Willoweliffe’s victory in the Sires' Produce Stakes, •of £SOO, is Yespbhsible 'for his being at the top of the list, as the exNew, Zealander, Nazimbva (winner of the Jast Christmas Cup) is a close second with. £879.

(From Our Special Reporter.) ’ CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. The fine wfather which.ha,d been in evidence here during the past week broke early on Saturday morning, and heavy rain set in, about 3 a.m. and continued until after 7 a.m., when the weather cleared. Between 7 and 8 .o’clock some heavy showers fell. The Addington track was in consequence very sloppy when the opening card of the August meeting came up ' for decision, but the going improved considerably during the day as a result of a strong sun, which made the afternobn 1 quite pleasant. There was a fairly large attendance, and some interesting racing, despite the bad track conditions. - Bonny Belmont was struck out of the. Introductory Handicap, for which Aileen Wood started favourite. The supporters of 'the favourite were soon disappointed.' for Aileen Wood broke up after the start and again so badly at the end of the first furlong that she dropped back last. Petei Lin also broke up at the start. Herbilwyn soon took charge, and at the end of a lap was showing the way to Nelson Boy, Koro Peter, and Young Carbine. Herbilwyn led into the back, but then Lady Fan took charge from Koro, Peter at the fat turn.. Lady Fan led Koro Peter into the straight,- where the latter came bn and won well by a good two lengths. Wild 1 Hebe was six lengths, away, with, Duke Bingen close, up fourth, and then' came Herbilwyn, Nelson Boy,, and To'nicl . , Tarzan, Desert Star, and General Bingen were . withdrawn from the Elettric Handicap, for which the bracket—Exclu-' sive and Darknite—started a'strong fancy. Harry Audubon and Nelson M'Cormack led Marshal Neil past ..the- stand, with Exclusive and Darknite close.up, followed by Lady Matchlight and Sahib, ■ Marshal Neil .led into the back, but at. the far turn Exclusive and Darknite were in charge. The two last-named led into the straight, where Darknite ’ was momentarily in front, but he tired, and Exclusive beat him by ; two lengths. Downcast made up ground going down the back and finished two lengths away third, with Sahib and Lady Matchlight next. Only one dividend was paid. - Native Prince "and Terence Dillon were taken put of the .-August' Handicap. Young Blake, Huoh Denver, and Dundas Boy broke up . at, the' start, and Zenith, Roi rn? r ’ > ean ‘■'kief, Daphne 'de Oro, Silk Thread,; and Glideaway formed the leading division when passing the stand for the first time., Zenith and Roi I’Gr had opened up a good gap at the. end of the next circuit, and they were well clear of Vesuvius, Logan,' Chief,. Imprint,, and I/aphne de Oro with a Jap to go.. The leaders were still well, clear >hen-racing' db'wn the back stretch, where Diindasfßoy commenced to move up on tbe outside of the field. Hoi I’Or went up to Zenith when rounding the top and then' led into the -straight. Roi FOr came on, and driven out, beat Dundas Boy by two lengths. . Zenith was third, three lengths away,, with Glideaway next. Silk Thread broke up during the race. The pacehad. the race to themselves, but /lenith tired in the last quarter. Dundas W wT? ot^ 00 we , n pl ? U P to a mile and a-half after a bad beginning,, but he put in a strong finish over the final four furlongs. Imprint looked dangerous after £n“i g i a w mi '?’ kut dropped back i n the ? lldeaway ' vas not well, placed, and had to cover a good deal of ground during part,of the race. t - ixl 6 s , a g°°d favourite'for the Trial Handicap but broke up at the start and so did Roddy and Sunny Bob. Robert Guy,,.Locanda Boy, .Hector’s Own, and Sun was the order passing the stand, and they were in charge almost all the vaj. Locanda Boy was acting as pilot with a lap to go. and Robert Guy was breaking up at different 'stages of the race. Going down the back Locanda Boy was joined by Morning Sun, and they led Robert Guy and Curfew Boy the straight. Morning Sun headed Locanda 2°LA a r)vay U P th c straight, where Robert again broke when lookinc Morning Sun tired in the last 50 yards, and Locanda Boy, coming again boat him by two lengths. Curfew Bov was a length and a-half away, and Robert tjuy was next. Then, came Sunnv Bob Great Delight, Steel All, and Zellsf. The favourite never emerged from the ruck, and Robert Guy must have won but for three or four bad breaks. Bonny Belmont soon established a good lead-in the Stewards’ Handicap, and with a lap to go was fully 20 lengths in front of Western Voyage, who was followed bv Audomimon, Nighborn, and Le Todd. Bingen btarr broke and Engagement put in some mixing without losing ground. Bonnie Behnont kept well clear and finally won .easing up by about 15 lengths from Western. Voyage who, beat Nighborn by .three lengths. Audommion was dose iip Be Todd broke badly when putting in a run halfway up the straight that" might !ia\e gamed him a place, and Engagement also mixed at the same time Maiwhariti. Dilworth, Evelyn Locanda. 1 1 avi,s Axnorthy. and Gleuelg wore run nmg in close order at the end of the first half-mile in tlje Queen Mary Handicap and Desert Star had joined in with half a mile to go. Dilworth and Maiwhariti were then piloting the way, and Linkman had improved his position. Maiwhariti and Dilworth turned for home together but a °d Linkman, finishing strongly beat Dilworth by two lengths. Harvest Child arrived from the back and was a head away third, just beating Maiwhariti Glenelg, Iravis Axworthy, and Evelyn Locanda yvere next. Trimmer was the popular pick for the Selwyn Handicap. Hector’s Own did not begin, well, and Nelson M'Cormack led Omaha, Granite City, Pluto, and William the Great past the stand. Nelson M'Cormack led down the back with Omaha and Pluto close up. Nelson M'Cormaek was still in charge halfyvay up the straight but commenced to tire, and Pluto, finishing on yvell. yvon by a length from Logan Hanlon, who got up and beat Nelson M Cormack by half a length. Omaha was next, and then came Acre and Exclusive who had been penalised 2sec for her win earlier in the day. Double Event, Epigram, Golden Bubbles Western King, Golden Devon, and Great Bingen were taken out of the International Handicap. Brentloc soon went past Genuine and Lingfield, and led them into the back stretch. Brentloc led to the fat turn, where Fight Ever and Genuine joined him. yvith Lingfield next. Fight Ever and Genuine led into the straight yvhere Padlock came with a brilliant run and beat Fight Ever by half a length Bessie Logan yvas two lengths . ayvay third, just beating Genuine, Jean M'Elwyn, and Brentloc. Bonnie Logan | and Native Prince collided just inside the I home turn and tipped out their drivers, : .who. however, escaped injury.

He finished full of running in Imin 51 2-ssec, a smart performance for a steeplechaser. He was carrying a fair weight. Elysianor and Glenrowan galloped six furlongs in Imin 23 2-ssec, and did not look capable of improving, Dutch Money could have improved upon the 56 seconds she took to run half a mile. Gay Sonnet followed and covered the last four of five furlongs in 53 3-ssec. Prickles beat Vesperns over six furlongs in Imin 25 3-osec, but there was not much in it, as Vesperus was staying 1 on the better. They maintained a solid pace from end to end and went stride for stride all the way, It was a capital schooling. Dubious. Taramoa, and Te Haunui set out to' school twice round the country. Dubious was easily the best. He led all the way, and both of his opponents were outgalloped and outjumped. Te Haunui was pulled up at the end of a circuit. ' Democratic. Antrim Boy, and Aurora. Borealis were schooled over six flights of hurdles together. They did not go much better than half-pace.
