Mr C. W. Cayzer, of the Zinc Corporation, Broken Hill, left for Australia on Thursday, Mr C. H. M'Laughlin, of the Hillside Workshops Tender Department, late of Addington, went to Christchurch on Thursday, and will return to Dunedin on Monday. A Sydney Press Association cablegram states that Mr E. H. Farrar (Minister of- Labour and Industries) sailed by the Ulimaroa yesterday to meet the New South Wales Premier (M r T. R. Bavin). who will arrive at Auckland by the M-i----kura.; , v A resident in New Zealand since 1861, Mrs Joseph Martin celebrated her ninetysecond birthday on Monday last (says the Auckland Star), She is living with her son, the Rev. J. F. Martin, minister of the Methodist Church at Devonport. For a long time she resided at Onehnnga. Mrs Martin was born in Belfast, Ireland, and went to Melbourne in 1856. Eight s'ears later she came across to-New Zealand, landing at Dunedin. Her Rush and was a lay. preacher in. the Methodist Church in Otago district. Over 30 years ago they went to the Auckland province, and Mrs Martin has Ixved there ever since. .Her husband died 17 years ago.There are seven sons, 34 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

The_ retirement of J/r John Porteous, since 1905 has been an inspector of Native schools, is announced, although it will not be effective for some time yet. Mr Porteous will first make a journey to Rarotonga on. departmental business. Mr Porteous first 1 entered the teaching service at Palmerston (Otago) as a pupil teacher, his father then being headmaster of the District High School. After a period as a student of the Training. College, Dunedin, - and the Otago University (where lie - gained - his B.A. degree, in 1891 and his MjA. degree a year later), he was appointed to the school at Thornbury (Southland). ■ Later he was. appointed first assistant at the South School, Invercargill, remaining there for yea r fi* w hen he was made an inspector of Native schools, and during the 24 years Mr Porteous has been connected with that branch- it has .grown .enormously-, In the south, and in Wellington, Mr Porteous has always taken a keen interest in athletics and football, and he is one of the Wellington Bowling Club s most successful tournament players.
