Ministerial. Mr W. B. Taverner (Minister of Railways) came to Dunedin on Saturday for a brief visit. 'Sir Walter and Lady Stringer left for Wellington by Saturday morning's train. The Mayor (Mr R. S. Black), who went to Wellington last week on civic business, will pay a visit to the West 'Coast before returning to Dunedin. Major Beasy, divisional commander of the Salvation Army, and Adjutant Bracegirdle left Dunedin on Saturday for the north to conduct meetings.' Mr H. L. Tapley was a passenger for the north on Saturday on Ids way To Wellington. Mr F. G. Gumming went to Christchurch by fhc express train on Saturday. Mr M. E, Dunham arrived in Dunedin from Wellington, yesterday. Mr C. H. Wing, the provincial organiser of the United Party, is at present a patient in Stafford Hospital. Flight-Lieutenant S. Wallingford, R.A.F., who is to take up duty with the New Zealand Permanent Air Force, arrived in. Wellington ' last week by the Mataroa from England. Flight-Lieu-tenant Wallingford is well known in New Zealand as a skilled marksman. The esteem in which Sergeant Sivyer is held by the members of the Wanganui Police Force was. evidenced when his colleagues gathered at the Central Police. Station last week to bid him-farewell prior to his departure for Taumarunui. Inspector Till said that Sergeant Sivyer was going to a post where he would have to act on his own initiative. There was no doubt about the sergeant’s ability and he .was sure the members of the local force would be sorry to lose him. On their behalf the speaker had pleasure in presenting the sergeant and Mrs Sivyer with a tea set. They all wished him every prosperity and hoped lie would go on to higher positions in the force. Sixty-one years ,in the drapery trade is the record of Mr Jacob Holt, who celebrated his 83rd birthday on' Saturday (says our special correspondent in Auckland). For many years he was "on the road,” and few men have been more generally popular, both with his fellow travellers and his customers. A Lancashire man, he was bom in 1846, and in the year 1-860 he was apprenticed to the firm of, Messrs JSllis and Jones, of Rochdale, Lancashire. When he was 30 years of age he decided to try his luck in the colonies, and set out for New Zealand. Upon arrival in Auckland in November, 1884, h? had no difficulty in getting a billet with Messrs Sargood, Son, and EwCn, who made him their traveller for the Auckland district. He afterwards joined the now defunct firm of Messrs W. M‘Arthur and Co. In 1896, after the firm-had gone out of business, he joined Messsrs Ross and Glendining, the well-known Dunedin firm, with branches throughout the Dominion, and for 25 years he was one of its best known and most rspected travellers.
