The South Canterbury horseman, D. O’Connor, has been engaged to ride Overhaul, a fancied candidate for the Grand National Hurdles, in his coming engagements.

Commenter, who filled second place in the Beaconsfield Hack Handicap at South Canterbury, is a three-year-old filly by Tractor from Commentary, by Blaokstone from the Clamannld mare. Cockleshell. She has not had-much racing, but she stayed out the mile and a-quarter in a manner which suggests good winning performances over a journey next season. Lancer was a distinct disappointment in the Pukaki Hurdles at Wash dyke on Thursday. Never at any stage of the journey did ho appear to be going like a place possibility, and eventually he finished a long way back. The Greyspear gelding was not suited by the heavy going, and at Riccarton next month he may show considerable improvement. His stablemato, Projector, also failed to handle the going, and he was at the tail of the field when the judge was reached. The North Island gelding, Elysianor, making his first appearance on a southern course, won the Pukaki Hurdles at Timaru on Thursday in attractive style. He was never far behind the leaders, and he owed his success to outstaying the opposition. His jumping was clean and fast, and it was an attractive performance. The. Novice Handicap at Timani on Thursday provided the unusual spectacle of a brother and sister fighting out the finish. Ell- Boa. a four-year-old, by Balboa from'Ella Sorella, was a strong favourite, but her elder bother. Mount Boa. who was neglected by backers, led her from end to end. He lias not done much racing, but he is a speedy galloper liable to earn some more money. He has been qualified as a hunter so he may be seen among the jumpers later on. Overdrawn, who is now in F. P. Claridge’s_ stable at Riccarton, ran a solid race in the Prince Edward Handicap at Timaru on Thursday. He was one of the pacemakers from the start, and he hung on to beat everything but the winner. Overdrawn was a useful performer early in his career, and his latest effort suggests that he is far from a spent force. King Balboa won the Prince Edward Handicap at Timaru on Thursday in the same easy fashion as when he captured the Timaru Cup last month. The Southland gelding is a great galloper in heavy ground, and he made short work of his opponents in the closing stages of the race'. He is a Winter Cup candidate; and he will help to keep the North Island conti ugent very busy in that event. Five members of the Ellis family, all brothers, were officially engaged at" the South Canterbury Jockey Chib's meeting, and they played a prominent part in the proceedings, two as trainers and three as jockeys (says the Lyttelton Times). F. W. Ellis; whose headquarters arc at Invercargill, trained King Balboa, the winner of the Prince Edward Handicap, while B. J. Ellis has Silver Light, the winner of the Craigmore Hack Steeplechase, in his Washdyke stable. The three riding memof the family all claimed a winner, A. E, Ellis'being on Sweet Refrain. L. J. Ellis on King Balboa, and A. S. Ellis on Silver Light. It is doubtful if a similar family record has been witnessed at any meeting in New Zealand. Lord Ranald has started three times in steeplechases during the past month and lie has won on each occasion. These are the only races he has contested, and it is hard to say how good he may be, as he is improving steadily all the time. He won the Wai-iti Steeplechase at South Canterbury very comfortably. It was unforunatc that Fabriano fell at the first fence, as if he had completed the course he would have provided an excellent tryout for Lord Ranald. In his absence the field was of moderate class, so that nothing was learned concerning the Riccarton gelding. Lord Ranald is in the Grand National, but though he is a particularly good novice the seasoned steeplechasers he will meet in that event will provide very different opposition to anything he has met so far. With more experience lie may take high rank over country, but it is much too early to expect Grand National honours from a horse that had his first racing a month ago.

TROTTING. FIXTURES, August 10, 14. 10. —N.Z Metropolitan T.C. September 7.—New Brighton T.C. October s.—Wellington T.C. October 5. —Methven T.C. October 12.—Waikato T.C. October 19. —New Brighton T.C. October 26, 28. —Auckland T.C. Uy Sentinel. Mac Locanda. the fnll-lrrotlior to Locanda Mac, in work at Addington, is a promising pacer, who should not be long in winning a race. Locanda Mac was a great performer a few seasons back, included in bis wins being the Auckland Cup of 1924. when he was driven in the colours of Miss N. Gunn by A. Fleming. Jewel Pointer lias been scratched for all ■ engagements at the New Z-a aland. Metropolitan Trotting Club’s August meeting. Recent reports from Auckland were to the effect that he is backward in condition, and his trainer had little hope of having him ready for a two-mile journey. It is not considered that there will be a very strong entry of Smtli Island horses for the Relief Fund meeting at Alexandra Park next month. The limiting of the total stake money to £2OOO (or the day does not allow the chib to give big prizes, or rather, not sufficiently big to encourage owners on the other side of Cook Strait to svmd horses to 'Auckland for a one-day meeting. Still, there are plenty of horses in Auckland and the country districts to provide line sport, and as nil will be anxious to give their horses a race early the nominations should be particularly solid. .The Auckland Cup winner Cold Jacket (4.24 2-5) is looking a picture just atpresent and hifr trainer could got him ready the races at any time, (says Orion). .The weather during the past couple of has not offered opportunities to give the black pacer any really fast work, but it would take very little to put him at the top of his form. If there arc any races to suit him lie may be given a run at the Relief Fund meeting, otherwise ho will be kept in steady T° ~ * or tlle October gathering of the Auckland Trotting Club.

SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT CLUB. FABRIANO WINS STEEPLECHASE. (From: Oun Special Reporter.) „ , TIMARU, July 27. Ihc South Canterbury Hunt Club's meeting was held in fine weather and a iau'ly larpre attendance viewed the sport. Ihe track was in a very sloppy condition, and the going was about as bad as possible. Two of the steeplechases became one-horse affairs. Carinthia won nicely in the Hadlow Hurdler, for which Zeuxis was a strong fancy", but a faulty jump seemed to settle him. Silver Light was anchored by her weight in the Pareora Hunters’ Steeples, in which. Diamond, Jack, although striking heavily at the stand double, proved much too good lot the opposition. Fabriano had a bloodless victory in the South Canterbury Steeples, after Handy tipped out. Ell Boa stayed on best in the Levels Handicap and a paddock tip in Student Prince won all the way in the Trot. Mataipuke had matters all his own way in the Teschemaker Cup. A fair field saddled up in the Hunters’ Plate. Master Garland was badly kicked when in tho birdcage and was allowed to be withdrawn. Exide was always with the leaders, and won after taking charge near _ the homo turn. The card concluded with Rascal and Membo coming right away, and in a good finish the former got there by half a length. Mr A. J. Hastings got his fields away from an excellent line. During the day £9682 wont through the totalisator compared with £12,213 10s last year. Results: HADLOW HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, _ Of HOsovs. One mile, and a-half. 4—W. H. and C. L. Carinthia landed in front of Gala Day over the final hurdle, and, coming on after a shake up. won by two lengths from Gala Day, Zenzis, who made a faulty jump at the six-furlong post, was six length? away, and Paris was next. Handy fell at the second last fence and left Fabriano to win without challenge. Handy was mounted by his trainer, and obtained second money by jumping the last fence. .Oriflamb refused twice at the double, and after jumping the first leg he propped at the next, and shot his rider over the fence.
