DUNEDIN ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
The Dunedin Orchestral Society will give the first concert of its forty-second season in His Majesty’s Theatre on Wednesday, when a fine programme will be presented, A perusal of the numbers to be performed by the orchestra should convince patrons of this fact. The society had always endeavoured to include in its programme a symphony, and for this occasion has chosen Tschaikowsky’s Fifth, but on account of the length of the work, can only give the second movement, the andante. It is typical of the other numbers, in that it depicts the sombre melody which is the peculiar charm and characteristic of this symphony. The “Hiawatha” suite (Col-eridge-Taylor) is in delightful contrast, and is one of the happiest compositions by this Composer. A selection from Meyerbeer’s “Le Prophete” is full of melodious excerpts. The overture “Di Ballo” (Sullivan)A Keltic Lament" (Foulds), with the solo work given to the cello, and a march, 'Bravour* (Zillmann) will complete the orchestral uart of the programme. The vocalists assisting the society arc Miss Mary Pratt and Mr Les. Stubbs. Miss Pratt is n young singer with a contralto voice of exceptional beauty, and it is anticipated that she will go far in the musical world. Mr , Stubbs is also a young singer of promise. Miss Pratt’s songs are “Break, Break, Break” (Carey) and “How Changed This Vision” (Handel). Mr Stubbs will sing “Harlequin" (Sanderson) and Song of - the Boses” (Alexander Georges). The box plan arrangcments.-arc advertised.
