ENGINEER’S SUDDEN DEATH

STRAIN OF A GREAT WORK. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 6. A tragic occurrence took place at the Arapuni hydro-electric power works on Saturday. Following the completion last week of this great undertaking, the power was turned on at 6.30 p.ni. Later, the engineer-in-charge (Mr James Wilfred Swaney), who was feeling the effects of tin strain, went for a drive with his wife and two friends. He was suddenly taken ill, and expired, before a doctor arrived. Mr Sivaney was born at Temuka 40 years ago. He served his apprenticeship at the Government Railway Workshops at Addington, and continued his education at Canterbury College School of Engineering. In 1914 he took a position with the Dunedin City Corporation at Waipori power station. In 1917 he joined the Public Works at Lake Coleridge power station, and was subsequently promoted to be first operator at Mangnhno. In 1925 Mr Swaney was appointed superintendent of Horahora, and,in March of this year he ivas also appointed superintendent at Arapuni. He 5 S survived by the widowand a daughter of 11 years.
