CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL

RESULT OF WEDNESDAY’S POLLING. SEVEN CANDIDATES SO FAR ELECTED. (Special to Daily Tunes.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 6. About noon on Saturday the check, or official count, of the first preferences recorded on Wednesday for candidates for the City Council was completed and the substitute returning officer (Mr A. .Freeman) announced that the quota was 1735. Tliis confirmed the anticipated result on election night that the following would be elected:—Messrs D. G. Sullivan, E. H. Andrews, M. E. Lyons, J. W. Beanland, and J. A. Flesher. These candidates received first preference votes . sufficient to elect them with surpluses in each case. , ’ The transfer of the surpluses was then begun, and at the end of the fifth count, which was reached on Saturday night a little before counting operations ceased for the week, Mrs £. K. M'Combs and Mr A. W. Beaven were declared elected. To-morrow morning a start will be made with the transference of Mr Flesher’s surplus. Then will follow the transference of the accumulated surpluses of Mrs M'Combs and Mr Beaven. The result of the transference of the large surplus of Mr Sullivan, who headed the poll by a big majority, was the election of Mrs M'Combs, who has an accumulated surplus of 3186. Mr Sullivan’s surplus was allocated thus according to parties:—Labour 3752, Citizens’ Association 262, Independent 406. The recount showed that altogether there were 1469 informal votes, a remarkable feature being the large number of voters who marked their papers according to preference, but failed to indicate- their first preference, presumably leaving that for the last and. forgetting to do so. The present position of the council election is that five Citizens’ Association candidates and two Labour candidates have been declared elected.
