TIMBER DISPUTE
LOYAL WORKERS ATTACKED. BRUTAL ASSAULT AT PETERSHAM. (United Press Association.) (By, Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, May 4. Further brutal assaults on loyal timber workers in the past few days have swelled the total of those attacked to 49. Last night, in a savage assault at Petersham, two men were knocked on the ground and kicked on the face, head, and body. The assailants made off in a waiting car. The men were taken to hospital covered in blood and suffering from concussion. Mr Corke, the timber merchants’ secretary, stated, that the timber merchants will not meet Messrs Garden, Kavanagh, and Reeves, the leaders of the Disputes Committee, in conference. POLICE AND STRIKERS. A FIGHT AT NEWTOWN, SYDNEY, May 4. (Received May 6, at 6.5 p.m.) A fight occurred at Newtown, when police and detectives went to the assistance of a timber worker who was being attacked by sympathisers of the strikers. Police who were furnishing protection to workers in the timber yards noticed men acting suspiciously, and, believing that they were members of a gang engaged in assaulting the workers, summoned aid by wireless. When a sudden >rush was made on a defenceless worker the police and reserves swooped on the attackers'and a melee followed, in which one constable was injured. The .police were victorious, and two men were arrested. THE DISPUTES COMMITTEE, AN ASTOUNDING ATTITUDE, SYDNEY, May 4. (Received May at 5.5 p.m.) Mr Corke, secretary of the Timber Merchants’ Association, replying to the statement by Mr Kavanagh, chairman of the Labour Council Disputes Committee, that the committee was taking no notice of assaults, declares that the attacks on volunteer workers are organised.
