Delayed by a heavy gale In the Tasman Sea*' the Huddart Parker Company’s Intercolonial passenger steamer UHmaroa did not .- arrive at Wellington from Sydney until 12.50 p.m. on Wednesday last—about 27 hours behind her schedule time. The UHmaroa left Sydney at 3.15 p.ra. on Friday, April “26. The ship Immediately ran Into a heavy south-south-easterly gale, with mountainous seas and heavy rain. The vessel was unable to make more than nine and a-half knots against the gale which changed from time to time from south-south-cast to aoutb-south-west, but after the first day out there was very little rain and the officers were able to take sights on two days, although the sky was mostly overcast On the afternoon of April 29 six ports were stove in and portion of the starboard rail ' was carried away. . The vessel was hove-to while " dead-lights ’’ were substituted for the broken ports. It was not until last Tuesday eevnlng Unit the weather began to moderate when the ship was about 50 miles off land’ The wind then changed round to the southwest. Captain W, J. Wyllle stated that it was some years since he had experienced a heavy gale which had lasted practically all the wav across the Tasman Sea. SUCCESS OP ITALIAN SHIP. Some of the Italiah-bullt vessels have not been altogether successful, states the Shinning World., The Conte Grande, built at Trieste 1 has had much trouble wIUi her propeller blades—made, in Germany—and they are now seeking bronze blades designed and made In England Interstage tangential steam dryers have recently been sent , from England to Genoa to be fitted In the Conte Grande, owing to their great success In the Conte Blancamano, built on the Clyde. They give economy and freedom from blade erosion In the ’ low-pressure turbines. AH Italian cruisers are fitted with tangential dryers la their water-tube boilers and these work most successfully. They are supplied by the makers In England. The motor vessel Saturnla, of the Cosullch Line, has relumed to Trieste for three months' machinery
