A Olinchport (Virginia) message states 1 that 20 children are known to have been killed and a large number injured in a tornado which demolished a two-storey frame high school at Rye Cove, a village 10 miles from Olinchport. —Australian Press Association. : CONFLICTING REPORTS. RESCUERS HARD AT WORK. NEW YORK, May 2. (Received May ,3, at 9 p.m.) Varying reports to-night, from Gate City (Virginia) state that between 50 and 80 bodies of children have been removed from the wreckage of Ryecove High School, which was demolished by a tornado. Rescuers. are working frantically to extricate some 250 children and teachers : from ruins . piled above them. , .. . .. . ■ Later reports indicate. that 12 children are known to be dead and 90 injured.—Australian Press Association. , GAOL IN OHIO STRUCK. TWO PRISONERES KILLED. NEW YORK, May 2. (Received May 3, at 8 p.m.) News from Columbus (Ohio) states that two prisoners were killed and six injured when a tornado struck the city gaol to-day., The prisoners were trapped in bunks when a wall crashed about them.—Australian Press: Association.
