“MOVIETONE” FILMS.
THE NEW ZEALAND CONTRACT EFFECT IN ENGLAND. (From Our Own Coiuiksponduxt.) . LONDON. March 27. The announcement that Western Electric have' signed a contract permitting ’* Movietone ” films produced by their method to be shown in New Zealand kincmas. by moans of the Pritish Talking Pictures apparatus, will.‘if confirmed, be hailed with satisfaction by many owners of- kincmas in this country. Hitherto representatives in England of Western Electric have refused to grant such permission. They have 1 stated repeatedly that they would allow films mad? by their method to be shown only by means of their own apparatus, or by apparatus which, in their opinion, would give the same results. Conversely, they refused to authorise the exhibition by their special projecting apparatus of films produced by any other “ sound ” system. _ It has been contended that these restrictions, if maintained, would, nullify to a large extent the provisions of the Quota ’ Bill. They have formed a subject of various recent questions in Parliament, and have been investigated by a committee of the Federation of British Industries. set up specially for the purpose. • . * - The indications now are that this bugbear of “ inter-changeabilitv,” ns it is termed, may be settled to the satisfaction of all concerned.
