NORTH-EAST HARBOUR.

During the past five or six yeafs Macandrew’s Bay has developed from a week-ending resort into a residential area. This perhaps is not so noticeable from the considerable increase in the population as from the number of places of businesses that have been opened in this seaside township. The present bus service, which runs to a convenient time table has been an important factor in the progress of Macandrew’s Bay. The new tar-sealed road is progressing very favourably; dangerous corners are being removed; bad bends are being straightened and the road generally is being greatly improved. In the township itself a movement is now under consideration to have street lighting installed and also a drainage and a water service—improvements which will be welcoi. d by the majority of the , residents. A. start is being made to widen, grade and metal the district road, and When this is completed it is intended to pay .attention to o.ther roads in the district. The monthly meeting of the Ratepayers’ Association was held in the hall on Monday, a full attendance of the committee being present. Tenders were received for alterations to the kitchen and supply of a pumice copper and steam vent, and the tender of Mr W. Riddell was accepted. The - attention of the county is to be called to the dangerous state of the present culvert where spoil has been tipped into the lagoon. The Anglican Church held a very enjoyable euchre drive in the hall on Monday, the prizes being won by Mr and Mis W. -Budd. Consolation prizes were presented ,to Mr and Mrs W. Rowland. Despite 1 the inclemency of the weather the hall was, comfortably filled. . -The Card Club held its weekly meetmg on Tuesday evening, when there were about 40 members present. The,- Glee Club has reopened the season with an increased'membership, and under the capable conductorship of Mr Cooper it intends to endeavour to uphold the high standard of .previous years. The election of two members of the County Council representing North-East Harbour will be held on Wednesday. The race for the Elliott Cup was competed for at Macandrew’s Bay on Saturday last, when six boats competed—namely, Seahawk, Squib, Pukuki, Agnes, Betty and Colleen, The race was won by Betty by the small margin of 21sec. The race was keenly fought from start to finish and was one of the most interesting acquatic events of the season.
