From there the course continued along the road, through Crest.' street,.'into.Cayell.street, along here, into Bowen street, which was followed to'Queen’s drive, finishing at Onslow House.'■ s k ' ' -The limit men,. Henry and Wiiiton (losec) 'set off ,'at a brisk pace, and held their lead .uhtil Crest'street was reached, the back-markers closing ujj fast.' On entering Cayell street, Greenfield . (12scei took the lead, closely followed by Watson ’(ssec),’ Rodgerson / (ssec)‘, and Asher (Sscc). Asher, ran ; a sterling race throughout, well deserving- his. win. He' Has‘a nice action, and .although he is a first-year runner more should: be heard of him as the season progresses with continued training. Watson, also a first-year’runner,, did well,to fipish second, and,with-consistent training should prove e valuable acquisition-to the club. 'F. Greenfield'also ran : a good rape, but lack of. training told on his in: the finishing stages., 1 ' The -thanks- of the club are due ‘to the officials : (Messrs A. ‘ E. Hut nevertheless the dozen or so‘engaged should- provide, a close' race. - Of those eligible to Start, Whaley ~ is perhaps, the most experienced, as he represented the club in last year's Edmond Cup raqc, but be; will .have to -be at- his best to give the other-performers a‘vieiv oP-his heels. ■ ’ In the , three-'mile cycle race Cooper, Farmer, Smith, Lucas, and Templeton will most likely be the back-markers, anfl they will'have to strike top’ speed to stave off, some .of the' front and middle markers. ' ■ The close proximity of' the club’s threemile championship does'not seeni , to’disturb some of -the runners, who are in steady training, and are expected' to run well. ,On the other hand, some members have, appeared somewhat - lackadaisical In their methods, and ■ wi11..-surely reap .the reward. On .present‘form, ,T: do not expect' Jiin : M'Laren to be. seriously troubled by anyone, with the : exception of E. ,J. Rugby League player, is turning out for the club later. He should be an asset, especially in-the track season. :■ Noel Berry, an ex-member of the Olympic Harriers; Wellington,- was unable to ruir last year on account of IlWiealth.. but ; he haa turned out again this-year. It: is hoped that' he will not; have the- same trouble again, • . IT. Ijourne is at present under consideration liy.the National Union -of; Student's. So far nothing has been definitely arranged, but it'is expected that matters wi 11 be : brought to finality ;u the course of a few days. The exec’.**',ve of the union is very anxious to. send a team, away. If it! is decided that representatives of : the colleges shall make the . trio across ■ the‘ Tasman, it should'be possible to select a very, strong team,’ as several of the uni? v’ersity athletes- are nnioncst. tlie ,outs'tanding performers in the Dominion doday.' . , ' r ■ ' .'. . :'l't is not often - that a prominent athlete proves himself successful . in such a. variety of sports as Wilfred Kalaugher, a New Zealand Rhodes .scholar,- has done since he went to Oxford: University. A few months back Kalaugher won the 120 ynrds_. hurdles at hia college Sports in 17 4-sscc, and a few days afterwards-, lie won his heat in a similar hurdles event, , inducing his time to-16 3-ssec, which he brought, down still more when ho won the , final in 16sec dead. special care in respect to propel'-ties which they, art?, privileged to use in- the course of their . weekly runs. ■ .Complaints have been made in the past, about .damage having been done, and .all concerned should see that- there is no further- cause ; for alienating the. sympathies of those. who are, under.' normal conditions, only -too pleased to: grant all the privileges they can to;.the 1 runners. ' . ' • Advice has been received by the Otago that the Tokomairirc. Harrier, and Amateur Athletic Club’s application for affiliation hag been granted - by -the Niew Zealand Council. ' •At the first winter meeting held by-the Auckland Amateur Athletic. Clubi ■J. W. Savidan won the mile and a-half stee'plc- | chase from scr and the 75 yards handicap off the 0 yards: mark! ' '. ..All the dubs in Wellington report (says the Dominion) that their membership cards have .almost- doubled in number, which gives, every indication that the season will prove a record one. ' At a run held,by .the-Christchurch harriers on Saturday- week (says--the-Sun), •I. G. Barnes-headed ihe. fast pack home. The paper- adds- that the-presence of Barnes has strengthened the fast - pack considerably. 1 ; Barnes, who is running in very fine form. led the fast pack - home ■again on Saturday.. , i ", The Mastcrton Harriers’ Club has had : the question of-the formation of a ladies’ ; -branch.' in view : for some time (says the 'Dominion), and a rumour is current that ; a party: of 'ladies'‘intend to get into training immediately. . - A Methodist Harrier Club has started : opnrations in Christchurch, bringing the {number : of. clubs* in- and around' the. city up to five. The formation of ne w clubs for | harrier- running .is not .weakening : the iolder ,bodies (says -the Sun). The num- • ber of harriers i«, increasing and all the clubs appear to he having their share of •the increase. The . Olympic Federation of Australia !has decided, that a special capitation fee sixpence a. bead shall bo levied on .affiliated amateurs in Australia for the . Commonwealth Olympic Gaines . Fund. . Stan Wright, .whej'officially recorded the ■figures of 56hr" a. miri; for the 474 miles 'from Auckland to Wellington, is a,.well‘matured rider.of 31 years. Wright is an •amateur ruler and a popular member of !lhe Port Nieholson Club. He is regarded !hy many as a typical “Tour de France” 1 rider, rugged, capable of amazing feats of endurance, arid fond of hard, climbing work. He rode a gear of -81 inches .throughout the- attempt, the best of weather' was not experienced. Showers over the initial stage to Awakino am) .strong head winds over- the t\vo : remaining_ made progress very tiring. . The University Club is much stronger than it‘has ever been before,-and if present indications/count for anything it should have a very successful season. Last Saturday 31 members took part in the nm, while a week previously.-the muster 'was .even better* 33. turning out. Last yeay the'.average .number, of participants in the runs was about ,16," while in 1927 it was-sometiniea as low as three, or four.
