Qualifying sea service for second mate will not bo altered, but a candidate must be at least 20 years of age. A first mate must be at least 215 years of age. and must have served IS months as watch-keeping officer on foreign-going articles whilst holding a second mate certificate. A candidate for master must bo not less than 23 years of age. The square rigged certificates are practically done away with but if a candidate wishes to sit for the examination and passes, an endorsement will be made on tho certificate to that effect Although the money Is authorised to Install radio beacons at Lyttelton and Wellington, nothing has yet been done. The Blarlne Department Is disappointed with the few ships that have been fitted with direction finders, and, therefore is In no hurry. Tho Government !s building a new vessel to replace the Tutanekal. and It Is proposed to have this vessel fitted with a fathom meter. Although the’ Admiralty might not accept any surveys mane with this Instrument, members of the seafaring nrofes-

slon will place a good deal o I reliance on any soundings given by Captain Bollons, who, no doubt, will be in charge of this vessel, and will be sure to err on the sate side.
