LAW STUDENTS’ DEBATING SOCIETY.

Tlio Law Students’ Debating Society met in the lecture room of the Supreme Court buildings on Monday evening the occasion being the holding of the Hist series of impromptu speeches for this year. Mr J. G. Warrington presided over an attendance of 18 members. Mr Warrington introduced (he judge for the evening, Mr A. C. Stephens ami referred to the fact that in past years Mr Stephens had taken a great interest in the society both in judging debates and speeches and in giving an annual prize foe impromptu speaking. The speeches, wore then proceeded with, each member drawing a subject when his turn came to speak, and being allowed one minute in which to prepare. A very enjoyable evening was the result, all the speeches being of a high standard. At the conclusion of ■ the evening ’Mr Stephens gave some , excellent genera! criticism of the speeches. The best speaker for the evening was Mr Shanahan, who spoke very fluently on "The Yellow Peril.” Me. Neville, whoso subject was “ Suicide,” was placed second. He gave a very well arranged speech. Mr Tnekwell, who spoke on “Compulsory,Military Training,” and Mr Arthur, who spoke on “A Little Learning is a - Dangerous Thing,” were placed third, equal. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Stephens.
