ALLEGED NEGLIGENT DRIVING. At the Magistrate’s' Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr H. W, Bundle, S.M., Moss Wylie was charged with negligently driving a motor car, thereby'causing the death of Magnus Laing, He was remanded to appear at Oamaru on May 7, bail being allowed in self £2OO and one surety of £2OO. LOYAL ALFRED LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Alfred Lodge, 1.0.0. F.. was held in the Coquet Street Hall on Monday night, Bro. W. R. Williams, the newly-installed N.G., making his debut for bis present tenure of office. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was not large. Bro. A. Wilson, being otherwise engaged, his report on the Grand Ladge session held at Nelson, was held over till next lodge night, when it is hoped that as many brothers as can make it convenient will be present, to hear the report. It was decided to issue a challenge,for the'Bradley Cup, which is open for competition among lodges of this Order in North Otago. The present holder of the coveted cup is the Waiareka Lodge, Enfield. With a complement of keen arid enthusiastic young members, Alfred Lodge should be a formidable opponent to the present holder of the cup. Two candidates for membership were proposed, and one new member was initiated, the officers for the current term acquitting themselves very favourably. VITAL STATISTICS. The vital statistics for the month of April were; Births, 18; deaths, 9; marriages, 1L RAINFALL. Mr W, S. D. Trotter reports that the rainfall recorded at “ Te Awn," Hillgrove, for the 48 hours ended April 29 was 1.18 indies. There has been a dry spell for siy weeks, Mr W. Forrester reports the following rainfall for April:—Bth, 4 points; I4th, 2 points; 16th, 11 points; 10th, 12 points; 17th, 0 points; 20th, 2 points; 27th, 3 points; 28th, 102 points; 29th, 11 points; a total of 153 points, compared with 388 points for April, 1928. For the four months this year the rainfall was 1191 points, compared with 833 points for the first four months last year. MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING. Gibson worn the button off the rifle, and alio the handicap button.W.D.F.U At a meeting held in Palmerston, it was decided to. form a branch of the women’s division of the Farmers’ Union- Everything points to the branch being very enthusiastic and progressive. There was a large attendance of ladies, while a number who were unable to attend signified their intention of joining. The following officers were elected;—President, Mrs Wedge; vice-president. Mrs. J. Craig; bon. secretary, Mrs C, J. Scott. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. Tile supplementary roll for the''municipal elections is small, requiring only one page. There has not been a great deal; of interest shown, but polling to-day will probably be on a par with previous occasions. WAIAREKA SALE. The yarding of stock,at the Waiareka sale yesterday was small all round, there being a particularly marked falling off in store sheep, The fat pens contained-no-thing of outstanding merit, except a couple of very prime lambs, which brought 34s each, while the lines of ewes offered were not very good. The following ig the range of prices:—Good, fat wethers, 32s 3d; two-tdotli fat wethers, 28s Gel; four pens of fat ewes, 2Js to 245; two pens of fat lambs, 37s 3d; good three-quarter-bivd ewes, 24s 6d; full-mouthed Romney cross ewes, 22s ’ 25s 6d; failing-mouthed Romney cross ewes, 17s'6d to 19s 6d; failingmouthed half bred owes, 14s 0d to IGs 9d: good mixed-sex lambs, 255: forward mixed sex lambs, 22s 6d to 23s Id; small mixedsex lambs, 14s 0d to 16s Ocl; Con-iedaL wether lambs, 17s 3d; good ewe lambs 24s 6d to 25s 6d; forward two-tooth wethers, 24s Od to 265; cull ewes. 7s Od to 10s. The yarding of cattle was small, only half a dozen head of cattle being penned, and prime cows brought £lO 12s 6d to £lO 17s 0d; and light cows £5 10s to £G 10s, while , a heifer realised £7 2s 6d. A pen of calves went at 255, and a yenr-and-a-half bull brought £4 10s. There was a medium penning of pigs, and price were, ns follow:—Large stores. 27s to 27s Od; best weaners, ]]s to 13s; medium weaners, 8s 6d to 9s; small weaners, 7s to 7s 6d. PERSONAL. * The bite Mr Andrew Hepburn, whose death at Christchurch was reported last week, was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland in 1847. In 1850 he came to New Zealand with bis parents, and resided at Half wav Bush. He married Miss Henly, there being six children of the marriage. Five years after the death of his wife he married Mrs Morton, and a daughter wa« born to them. The deceased spent many years in the North Otago district, residinr m turn at Enfield. Herbert, Hampden and Oamaru. About 11 years ago he went to Christchurch, where he lived in retirement. 1 NORTH OTAGO REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION, The weekly meeting of the North Otago Referees Association was held last evenjug, there being a full attendance of mem. bers. Mr J. Palmer presided. Mr II Booth was elected a member of the association. Two questions which were submitted to the New Zealand Referees'’ Association were replied to as follows:—(It If the ball were being carried down the field by two or more players a tackle could not take place whilst the players were moving, and (21 n scrum cannot take place unless the ball is on the ground, and if the ball is being held breast high by two or more players the ball may be taken out or passed out. The two junior referees who ordered off players last Saturday were commended for their action. NORTH OTAGO .BOXING ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the North Otago Boxing Association held last evening, Mr D. Kennedy presided over a large attend•awce of members.

The secretary was instructed to write to some of the sporting enthusiasts in the country districts in order to increase the membership of the association. It was decided that the usual North Otago boxing championships be held in July. OAMARU RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Oamaru Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last evening, Mr T. J. Guthrie (vice-presi-dent) presiding. ,-A vote of condolence with the relatives of comrades who bad “gone west" during the past year was carried in the customary' manner. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual reportj noted the decided increase in membership and the necessity for the existence of the association, especially in regard to pensions for dependents, the helping of “ lame dogs ” over the stile, and the value of the Poppy Day fund in the relieving of unemployment and distress. The Cash Purchase Society was an innovation that' had fully justified itself. Feeling reference was made to the ser- 1 vice_ rendered by the Victoria League in placing wreaths on the 63 soldier graves in the Oamaru Cemetery. Appreciation was expressed of the spontaneous support given by the public to the_ Poppy. Day appeal and the generous assistance of a,doyoted band of workers both in town and country. The report was adopted.. In moving the adoption of the balance sheet, Mr Paterson remarked oii the decreased general expenditure and to the increased amount paid in capitation, which was a welcome sign, as it disclosed an increased membership. Several members commented favourably on the healthy financial position. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr N. N. Fraser; vicepresident, Mr T. J. Guthrie (re-elected); treasurer, Mr J. T. Adams (re-elected); chairman of executive, Mr Ivan Paterson, (re-elected); hon. solicitor, Mr A. Hamilton- . (re-elected): executive —'Messrs Grater, Ditniok. Glynn, Mollison, A.. G. Smith, Jeffery, Williamson, and M’NuHy.i The position of hpn. auditor was left to the incoming executive to fill, . A vote of appreciation was accorded to the retiring president (Mr' H. J, S. Grater) and to the retiring auditor (Mr H. Robertson), A vote ; of .thanks was passed to the outgoing executive and to all who had helped to make the year a successful one.
