“ GLEN MORVIS ” JERSEY STUD DISPERSED. S.-Etwcithy was held at the homestead, Pareora, Timaru,, oh Saturday, April 20, when "a. catalogue of 38 cows, heifers, and bulls was"offered, the auctioneer's being " Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd. Buyers were present from all parts' of the, -South Island, including the West Coast and Southland, while Auckland breeders were represented at tins sale by commissioners. The chief interest centred in the eight-year-old cow Pareora Cherry Blossom, the darn of Pareora Echo Blossom, the champion two-year-old heifer of New Zealand, with a record of 819,811 b fat. This is a. magnificent cow. having tremendous, capacity and a splendid "vessel. She was purchased by Mr J. i. Royds. of Christchurch, at 80gns,' and, as she is in calf to Rpsevale Echo. Burkeyje, the sire of the champion twp-year-old heifer, she is a bargain at the price. . Another beautiful cow was Pareora Gyda Posch, which was secured for 42gns by Mr .T, R. Eades, of Edendale .South. This.cow has all the qualifications of an outstanding show champion, having a. beautiful • head, straight topline, and finished beautifully, oyer the tail, depth of hodi', and-a".'splen-did vessel. Doubtless Mr Eades will give her, every opportunity to prove tier worth as-a .show champion. The cows and heifers, including several empty heifers, averaged 274gns, while the' bulls sold up' to 30Jgns. THE AVONMORE STUD.

The .first sale of surplus Friesian cattle from the “ Ha ploy ” Stud, owned, by Mr George Hassall, of Eaiapoi,', North pahterbnry, in conjunction with cattle from Mr Jerome M'Anulty’s “AvonmorcStud, at Methven, was held in Tattersall’s Horse Bazaar, Christchurch,-on Monday, April 22. The selling was. conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Messrs H. Matson and : Co. The line of 20 heifers offered by : Mr Hassall was considered the best that has ever been offered for sale by one breeder" in New Zealand. With very few' exceptions, they were ML class l enough to, compete with success in 'any. show ring, in the.-Dominion. .Mr Hassall founded his herd on the famous old Longhe'ach strains, to which Have been, blended'in sopie"of the younger stock somc of "the best A'm'erican strains. There is no ■ question.' of doubt that the best of the Butch blood gives us the width, straight topline, depth, capacity, and the beautiful - heads which go with the true type of Friesian, and some of which are' lacking, in "some of the pure American cattle.' Mr Hassall already has bad some.considerable success in the show ring, winning the royal championship in Christchurch in 1927 with ’ the beautiful cow Ellesmere Darkie. Undoubtedly this ds only a beginning, ;as . he has the-cattle which will win for.him.the highest honours in any show ring and also ,as producers. This was the 'first annual sale, and the • attendance was limited to local breeders only, with , the exception of one breeder from the West Coast andipne from Otago._ No high price were realised, but. one’ thing- is certain-; — that the same buyers will not have an opportunity of securing ■ heifers - at ; the same prices at the next 'sale. ■ The_ cattle are now - well distributed, and. it .is.-safe to say they will in.future be found competing in most of the leading show tings in the South Island. This will be- a splendid advertisement for Mr Hassall, the” benefit of which will be reaped at his next sale. A small lot of heifers and-a bull were offered.on behalf of Mr Jerome M‘Annlty. These were bred from some of cows, including a daughter of Model Sadie De Kbl, C.O.M. 8301 b fat. Unfortunately, these, cattle were presented in very low condition, and', under the circumstances, the prices realised must be considered very satisfactory.
