STEAMER SUSSEX.
FIRE IN AFTER HOLD. VESSEL RETURNS TO SAMARANG. (Paa United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 29. The »Union Company has received advice of a serious fire in No. 4 hold of its chartered steamer Sussex, which left Samarnng on Friday morning on the way from Calcutta to Auckland. When the extent of the fire was ascertained the vessel put back to Samarang, where she arrived on Friday evening. The after part of the steamer had been flooded, and it was hoped to extinguish the fire yesterday. The cargo is principally rice, bone meal, and pineapples. As soon as the fire is extinguished the cargo in the holJ will be discharged. The Sussex, which is of 6957 tons gross, has been engaged in the trade between Eastern ports and New Zealand for several years. She is one of the Union Company’s chartered vessels. The Sussex made a trip to the Pacific Coast last year, and loaded for New Zealand. After discharge at Wellington she proceeded to Australia, then to Java and Calcutta. Eastern merchandise was loaded at Calcutta towards the end of March, and the Sussex left that port on April 3 for Penang, Rangoon, Singapore, and Samarang to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She was expected to leave Samarang on April 26, but in consequence of the fire she will he delayed at the Eastern port for several days.
