COUNTY AMALGAMATION.
TO THE EDITOR. IK >—l read a letter some few days ago by Mr A. D. Bell, in which he states that he nominated Cr Chapman for the Dunback Riding oil the distinct understanding that the. candidate would, if elected, vote against any further attempt at amalgamation. 1 understand pressure has been brought to bear on other members who voted for amalgamation, and they have backed down and given their word to vote against any further attempt at annexation, and have been re-elected unopposed. I notice that Mr Smith, member for Goodwood, is opposed by Mr Ireland. Mr Smith is the man who, by bis nianly and straightforward action in admitting he made a mistake when voted for amalgamation, without any pressure from ratepayers voted for the motion which was carried to rescind the former motion agreeing to amalgamate, thus preventing the Waihemo County Council from going out of existence. Seeing that most of those who voted to put the county out are allowed to retain their seats unop. posed, would it not be an act of courtesy on Mr Ireland’s part to allow Mr Smith to retain his seat unopposed, as, without Mr Smith’s prompt action, there would be no Waihemo County in which to vote on May 8. —I am, etc., Ratepayer.
