The “ big man ” of the merchant service is undoubtedly Sir Arthur Rostron, captain of the Bcrcngaria, who has lately received the French Legion of Honour. Besides being a K.B.E. r and commodore of the Cnnard Line, Sir Arthur is an aide-de-camp to the King, the first merchant .seaman to be so honoured; and a former commander of the Mauretania, in which he crossed the Atlantic nearly 250 times. When he was captain of the Carpathia in 1912 Sir. Arthur Rostron rescued 808 people from the sinking Titanic. For this he received a loving cup from the survivors, a gold medal from the United States .Congress, and a. cheque for £2OOO subscribed by admiring Americans.
