AN INTOXICATED MOTORIST.
A SUBSTANTIAL PENALTY. £SO OR THREE MONTHS IN. GAOL. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 27. A fine of £SO or three months’imprisonment and his license cancelled for twelve months was the penalty which Alfred Jackson had to pay for drinks he had consumed yesterday. Ho was charged before Mr P. K. Hunt. S.M, in the Police Court this morning with being in a state of intoxication while in charge 8 , motor lorry. Sub-inspector M Carthy said that Jackson had backed his lorry out of Victoria street across the tram lines at Hobson street intersection, and had ended its career by hitting a tramcar. The motorman had jumped out and found that the man was drunk. He had a woman with him who had been fined that morning for drunkenness. Mr Holmdcn, who appeared for the accused) said he had already been severely punished, as the damage to his car totalled £SO. Mr Hunt; Well, be is fined £SO, and his license is cancelled for 12 months He will bo allowed 14 days to pay. That will give him time to sell nis lorry.
