DISCOLOURED WATER.

ATTEMPT TO SOLVE PROBLEM. WATER COMMITTEE’S ACTION. What is hoped will be a solution of the problem of the dirty w'ater which has been reticulated from the Ross Creek reservoir* ever since the flood waters leapt the by-wash and filled the main supply with muddy water has been arrived at by the Water Committee of the City Council. The chairman of the committee (Cr W. Begg) stated last evening that the service main at the reservoir had been connected direct with the intake from Ross Creek, while the cock controlling the flow of the water from the reservoir had - been cut off, thus allowing- only the clear water of the creek to flow into the main. The work of connecting the main with the intake was put in hand on Friday and was completed at midnight on Saturday, the expeditious carrying out of the work reflecting great credit, on the sub-en-gineer (Mr Williams), who was in charge of the operations. The water from the intake "was diverted from the reservoir to the new main’’ connection early yesterday morning, and steps were immediately taken to scour all the mains in the vicinity and so get rid of all discoloured water which had been released from the reservoir. The downfall of rain yesterday presented a fresh problem, however, as it was realised that should the creek water also become discoloured, matters would not be improved. Two men were - consequently stationed at the new main intake to keep a watch on the water, ■ and were given orders that, should the creek water become more discoloured than the water in the reservoir, the creek was to be diverted from the imain and the reservoir cock reopened. If, however, fortune smiles upon the efforts of the Water Committee to abate the dirty water nuisance, and. the creek water remains clear, the new system will remain in action until such time as the reservoir has had time to settle, when the old system of supply will be reverted to.
