HOCKEY.

THE SEASON OPENED. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. Saturday did not provide the best of weather for the opening of the hockey season, but playing conditions were very fair, and in both men’s' and ladies' games some good play was witnessed. MEN’S GAMES. UNIVERSITY A v. TECHNICAL OLD BOYS. , A drawn game resulted from the meeting of the University A team and Technical Old Boys. The match was played on Oval No. 1, the ground being in fair order though a trifle uneven in places. The game was commenced with a University attack which was protracted for a few minutes and wlftcb culminated in a high shot from Thompson, eluding the goalkeeper. Technical attacked from the bully, but the Blue backs were equal to the task. Another attack by University saw_ Howie go through to score. Technical again took up the offensive and maintained the pressure for a time. An opportunity presented itself which Harris was not slow to take, and Technical’s score was opened. A short time after, L, Sil? ver brought the scores even, and they remained at two all until half time. The commencement of the second spell saw Technical still making determined attacks, and play centred in .University’s territory ■for some time. Finally the Blues succeeded in breaking away, and Thompson scored their third goal. The Technical forwards took the ball in a dashing movement to University’s circle, and O’Brien once again brought the scores even. It was again University’s turn. Forcing back a Technical attack, the Blues went up-field, and Thompson, for the third time, put his side in the lead. Leslie increased the lead to 5—3 in the Blues’ favour. Technical became more determined, and Harris seizing an opportunity, drove a fast ball in to the net. From mid-field play, L. Silver secured the ball and went away by himself to score the equalising goal. The game ended immediately with the scores: Technical Old Boys 5 . University A 5 Mr G. Hewitt was referee. , ALBANY v. TRAINING COLLEGE. Albany met Training College on Saturday, the game resulting in a rather decisive win for ihe former team. College was the first to attack, the only result of the effort being a twenty-five. Albany was similarly rewarded a few minutes later, i. lay continued up and down for a time, until, from a bully, Morris sent to 0 Dey. who centred nicely, and Rennick went on to score. Play was again swinging up and down, each side keeping the other from completing a movement. Plav was in one circle and then the other, but iwose was playing a good game and was saving some hot College shots well. The College defence was also very steady. When half-time-was called, Albany was attacking. Offside play spoilt a good Albany attack at the commencement of the second spell. College came away to gain “ Albany then attacked again, and O. Dey passed in from the wing for Morns to get possession and score Albany made another determined ttack from the bully, play being right to Colleges circle. Baxter missed.
