WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Waikmiaiti County Council was held yesterday, and was attended by Crs Briscoe (chairman), Gilmore, Heckler, Laley, M'Lachlau and Preston, INSPECTOR’S REPORT. Following is the monthly report submitted by the inspector (Mr T. Lang):— Hawksbury Riding. —The gravelling contract on Mount Watkins road is nearly completed. As the road which the gravel was being carted over was badly cut up through the heavy traffic, permission was obtained from the Public Works Department to extend the gravelling to the amount of the Government grant. One and a-quartcr miles have now been gravelled. Bctlume’s road is now being graded, and will afterwards require 60 yards of gravel. The, creek on Nimmo’s road at Taiori Penn has been deviated, to avoid the willows which were obstructing the outlet of the culvert. The floor of the largo culvert on Mill road has been covered with concrete.— Approved, Bethnne’s road to he gravelled as soon as convenient. Merton Riding.—-The new crusher is now at work on Russell’s road, crushing 200 yards of stone which was quarried a year ago to metal this road, and is quite satisfactory. As there was non enongn metal to finish the road .‘lO or 40 yards are now being quarried. The road will then be in good order from the main road to the top of the hill, but 60 yards are wanted on the Seacliff side, through the mental hospital property. The ditches on Round Hill road through the Native reserve have been cleaned out.—Approved: 00 yards of metal to be put on the Seacliff side of the road, the mental hospital authorities to be asked to metal the portion of the road through the hospital property, the member for the riding and the inspector to confer with the medical superintendent. Blueskin Riding.—Most of the slips have been cleared from the Port Chal-mers-Waitati road, and all the slips from the outside of the road have been filled up. The metalling contract on Lower Harbour road is completed, 56 chains from the borough boundary being metalled. The road widening near Purakanni Cemetery is also finished. This road above the junction of the Mihiwaka station road is covered with loose metal, and requires raking in and blinding. The fords on Millar’s and Manson’s roads have been made passable, and a portion of the last-named road gravelled. The road near Orokonui bridge has been gravelled where the gravel was washed off by the recent floods, and the road to Kawarika is being surfaced, and gravel put on where necessary.—Adopted, the inspector,to proceed with the raking in of metal on the main road above Mihiwaka Station road, same to be blinded with rotten rock.

North-East Valley Riding.—The largo culvert at the top of Reservoir road has been repaired, and the washout oa the same road beloAv the bridge has been filled in, and a retaining wall built. Two trucks of gravel or screenings will be required before the winter, for the foot, hs on Hall road and Main road. Screenings have been ordered for the culvert at Pigeon Flat, to re-build the walls with concrete. The remainder of the slips on this road will probably be removed next week.—Adopted, and gravel procured for the footpaths at Sawyers’ Bay. Main Highways.—Main Highway No, 1 (Dunedin-Christchurch road): The usual grading has been done during the month between Merton School and Palmerston, but a. portion of the road opposite Cherry Farm is still badly corrugated. The new metal between Waitati and Kilmog requires grading in, but it will probably be a week or two before the grader is available, AS soon as the crusher is finished on Russell’s road, I propose crushing about 300 yards of metal at the quarry near Hammond’s and at the bottom of the hill, where stone call be got from the creek. Most of the slips have been cleared from the road between Waitati and the top of the Kilmog Hill. Main Highway No. 2 (Evunsdale to Morton) : The new metal on this road between , Evansdale and Omimi has been raked in and blinded. The road between Seacliff and Puketeraki requires about 250 yards of metal. Main Highway No. 3 (Dunedin to Waitati, via Leith Valley): A temporary bridge has been erected over Williftma’s Creek above the site of the old bridge. The slips above the bridge have been cleared wide enough to allow the traffic to pass. Both of the fords havp been made passable, and the road between the fords, which was badly scoured by the river overflowing has been gravelled. The filling in of the washout on the lower end of the road has not been commenced yet, and the traffic has to go round by Donald’s Hill. The total damage on this road is estimated at £l72o.—Report approved, the metal required for No. 2 Highway to be procured, all bridges to be cleared of gravel, and running planks put ceed with filling in of a washout at the bottom of No. 3 Highway. CORRESPONDENCE. A voucher for £244 5s Cd, subsidy on main highways, was received from the Public Works Department.
