RACING NEWS. i FIXTURES. .April 20. 27.—Nelson J.C. j April 27, 29.—Waikato R.C. i May 3, 4,—Marlborough R.C. May 4.—Oamaru J.C. ' May 4.—Marton J.C. May 9, 11.—Egmont R.C. May 16, 18.—Wanganui J.C. May 25.—Ashburton R.C. June 1, 3.—Otaki Maori R.C. 1 June 1,3, s.—Dunedin J.C. June 1, 3. .5. —Auckland R.C. ■ June 20, 22,—South Canterbury J.C. By Sentinel. i Royal Saxon continues to get through good, useful -work. Tardy showed slight signs of soreness after working yesterday morning. Bon Rose, who has been showing a good deal of speed in her races, ran a creditable race in the Challenge Stakes. She will probably start favourite in the Novice Stakes to be run at Amberley to-day. Great Star has a big weight in the Seadown Handicap, but he ran a really good race in the Great Easter and looks sure to be supported at Amberley. Prickles was just beaten in the Sockburn Handicap by Battle Colours, and a repetition of thatform would make her dangerous in the Starky Memorial Handicap. Arrowmir, Paper Boy, and Impertinence may also run well in their engagements. Waving Corn has thickened out nicely since she was last seen in public, and is acquiring a more robust appearance than formerly. H. and A. Cutts have received the following four yearlings during the past week from the Stonyhurst stud, all claiming The Ace as their sire:—Filly from Brave Deed, filly from Soldier’s Hope, filly from Scrimmage, and gelding from Miss Mimic. Zeuxis has commenced to show promise in his schooling over hurdles. Magna Charta is another that continues to show improvement in the same direction. Kaikahu may be schooled over fences if he stands up to his work. He has been a fairly brilliant hurdler, and his pace would be useful over country. The brush fences on the schooling course at Wingatui have all been renewed in view of the Dunedin winter meeting. , Overhaul and Antrim Boy were schooled over four flights of hurdles on Thursday morning and shaped fairly well. D. P. Wilson has taken up the two-year-old Lord Quex —Sundust gelding Sunward, who was turned out shortly after his arrival from the North Island. Black Duke makes a slight dry wheeze when working, and the fact suggests that his wind is not too good. He has, however, been the same throughout his career C. Geiseler has received two yearlings to be handled for Mr A. H. Murdock. One is a gelding by Weathervane from Gardenia, by Boniform—Maltcgnrde, by Charlemagne ll—Annabelle, by Lionel —Anna by Musket—Florin, by Traducer from Rupee, the French-bred mare who produced Spade Guinea (New Zealand Cup and Dunedin Cup). Apropos (Welcome Stakes, etc.), S i I vovjii ark (Welcome Stakes, etc.), Merrie England (Great Autumn, 9.1, as a three-year-old), and others of lesser note on the turf. The other youngster is a filly by Last Dart from Native Lady, by Formative—Edith Cureton, by Castor from Frailty (dam of Trenton), by Goldsbrough. Both youngsters are bred on very attractive lines. Both strains have been represented at Dunedin race meetings in the long ago, as Trenton ran second to Vanguard in the Dunedin Cup prior to going to Australia and running unluckily in two Melbourne Cups, whilst Silvermark and Apropos were both trained at Forbury Park for their wins in the Welcome Stakes. It is quite possible that Booster and Black Duke will accompany Kapuna and Umtali-on a North Island campaign, which may start with Egmont on May 9 and H, then at Wanganui on May 16 and 18, and then on to the Auckland- winter meeting on June 1,3, and 5. Umtali, Kapuna, Booster and Black-Duke appear amongst the nominations for the Egmont meeting, and the horses named may be shipped north by the Manuka, which sails for Wellington on Wednesday next. The handicaps for the first day of the Egmont meeting are due on Tuesday, April 30. A fairly large number of horses were worked at Wingatui yesterday morning, but only at half-pace speed or a little better. Money Mine has built up a good deal in -condition since racing at Riccarton, and now looks ready for a chance to show improved form. Captivate looks a much improved horse in appearance as a result of being clipped. Evidently he was in much better condition than was suggested by the roughish coat he sported last week. It is reported from Wanganui that Mr G. M. Currie has decided to send Episode to Australian to be mated with the imported horse Moabite, whose stock are highly thought of in Sydney. Prior to making alterations to the tracks at Marton the General Committee met the local trainers and discussed matters in connection with the work. Highwayman, who started in the hurdles each day at Hastings (says an exchange), comes from Tasmania, where it is said he was hardly ever out of a place. If that is so, a lot of New Zealand hurdlers could be named w-ho would never lose in Tasmania. . At the clearing sale of stock of the late Mr Taranaki Te Ua at Hastings, the two-year-old filly Te Awha , (Lord Qnex—Makere) fetched 260gns, and Huikai went for 130gns. connection with the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday next, it is announced that visitors • from* Dunedin can arrive by the. first express from Dunedin in time for the first race at Oamaru -and return by the second express from the north, leaving Oamaru at 5.40 p.m. This arrangement enables the whole of the day s programme to be witnessed. TROTTING. FIXTURES. April 27.—New Brighton T.C. May 4.—Cambridge T.C . May 4.—Oamaru J.C. (two events). , May 9, U. —Forbury Park T.C. /’ Mar 18.—Oamaru T.C June I 3.—Hawke’s Bay T.C. June I, 3.—Canterbury Park T.C. June i,—Ashburton T.C June 22. 24.—Auckland T.C. By SESTINUL. The appearance of the handicaps for the first day of the Forbury Park meeting suggests that some unweildly fields are likely to be seen out unless they are considerably thinned by- the acceptances. The principal feature of the adjustments for the Prince of Wales Handicap consists in the fact that the back markers have been let out from the marks they were on at the Addington Easter meeting. The large field in front of them is no doubt the reason why they have been eased, but on the other hand, both Terence Dillon and Author Jinks are recent winners. Terence Dillon won on the first day at Addington in 2.46 1-5, and was handicapped on 4.25 in the President’s Handicap and on the same mark as Author Jinks. They have not much cause for complaint on a 4.2 G mark. Daphne de Oro, who was on a 4.28 mark in the President’s Handicap and went 4.29, is on the former mark at Forbury Park, and as she was deemed short of work at Easter should at least go to, her Addington handicap. King Pointer won in 4.27 off a 4.29 mark, and . as he won nicely seems well placed on his winning mark. Silk Thread looked dangerous when he led into the straight in the race won by King, Pointer, but broke. He now meets King Pointer on 36 yards better terms. Silk Thread was winning the High Class Handicap, but broke a couple •f strides from the post and was beaten by a head by Audacious. . He also made a break early in the race, but even so, . it was, the final mis that cost him the race. The mix nearly brought him dbown, and instead of winning by a length

or so he suffered a head defeat. On the first day Silk Thread was on a 4.29 mark, and after his brilliant form and time to improve, he heads really well in on a 4.30 mark. If that is so Audacious, who beat Silk Thread, must be dangerous on the same mark as the American horse. Acceptances avo duo on May 3. After winning over two miles on the first day of the Addington Easter meeting Athalone came out and went 2.46 3-5 and hence reads well on a 2.15 mark in the Flying Handicap after going the equivalent of a 2.13 gait. Great Parrish lost about a furlong when breaking early in the Ruakaka Handicap. Apparently the mistake cost him the race, as he was finishing fast in fourth place. The three-year-old filly Belle Asworthy is reported to have won easily when she scored in the Waitoa Handicap. J. Bryce has a team of 26 horses at present, including several youngsters that are being handled. A rather unusual incident, which does not savour well for the game of trotting from the public’s point of view (says the Sun) centred round Arikitoa, who contested the Autumn Handicap at Ashburton recently. This gelding, who recently joined M. B. Edwards’s team, had been handicapped on a 4.53 mark, when his West Coast and Hawera outings entitled him to a much tighter peg. It was not until the totalisator had been open for some time that the public was notified that Arikitoa had been rehandicapped to start off 84 _ yards instead of 24 yards, the owner having consented to the change, which is a most unusual happening at trotting meetings. The Press reports that Delightful lias been sold by Mr J. F. MKendry and has left F. Holmes’s stable. G. M’Kendry will train the gelding at Addington. Delightful is a four-year-old gelding by Happy Voyage—Little Doris, and has been unlucky in his racing. His- first outing last year was in the Welcome Handicap of one mile and a-half at Addington, when he finished third to Free Advice and Writer after doing 3.30 2-5. At the Ashburton meeting in April he won the Improvers’ Handicap in 3.29 from a 3.50 mark, and this performance discounted any chances he might have had of picking up a race. He is still a useful sort, and if properly placed may yet win a race for his new trainer. Steel All, a gelding racing in New South Wales, is regarded as a likely proposition for New Zealand. Recently he won over a mile in 2.14 and ran third over two miles in 4.35. Bonne Fille, a mare by Petereta—Dairymaid, who raced unsuccessfully at Ashburton, is the latest addition to D. Withers’s team. New South Wales owners seem to have a grievance against the trotting authorities over the small amount given in stakes at the various meetings. A Sydney writer comments a s follows:—At the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting. Club’s Easter meeting W. J. Tomkinson received £2OOO for winning a mile and a-quarter handicap at a 2.14 gait. At the New South Wales Trotting Club’s Easter meeting Herb. Chant received £BS for winning over one mile 1 5 yards at a 2.14 gait. At the same New Zealand meeting, the Express Handicap, two miles, carrying £4OO prize money, was won by Athalone in 4.34 3-5. At Epping, now known by the high sounding name of Harold Park, Chant, for running third with Steel All, in 4.35, received the magnificent sum of £5. Nighhorn, for winning over two miles in New Zealand in 4.38 4-5, a 2.19} gait, received At Harold Park, Harry Cohen, for winning with Towrang Boy over a mile and a-half at a 2.18} gait, received £42 10s, In view of the fact that the New South Wales Trotting Club made a clear profit of £6OOO in the past 18 months, owners and trainers do not think there should be occasion for such parsimony. THE WAIKATO MEETING. , (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, April 26. Excellent acceptances have been received for the opening of the Waikato meeting to-morrow, and large fields are likely to be in evidence. The course at Te Rapa is one of the best in the province—in fact, there are few better .in the Dominion, so that large fields can be raced with safety. If is the general opinion that all the events are very open, and possibly there may be a few surprises, A fair amount of' rain has fallen this week, and the going is likely to be dead, although, if rain falls overnight, it will be heavy. Recent form points to Vivo, Gala Day, and Highflown racing prominently in the Frankton Hurdles, and they will no doubt receive strong support. There are ‘ many possibilities in the Maiden Stakes, and the luck of the running will be a factor. Measurer, Just Nell, and Liona have raced respectably lately, and may show up. Measurer was prominent in similar company at Avondale. Praetor, Royal Finance, and Pellette read nicely placed in the Juvenile Handicap and are likely to be in demand, although on a heavy track Bennie and , Currajong may be preferred. Praetor was narrowly beaten in his last start and has been working attractively in the meantime. If the ground is dry Aussie will run in the Storey Memorial Cup, and his presence will give the event added interest.

It will be his last attempt at a middle distance and he should run a solid race. However, he will find Corinax, King Lu, and Flying Juliet very difficult to beat at the difference in weights. Corinax and King Lu may share favouritism. The Linley Hack Handicap is very open. Standfast, Indolent, and Black Make may be the prime farcies, and recent form sjys a lot for their chances. Standfast was third at his last start, and would have won but for being left some lengths at the start. If reserved, Le Choucas, whose recent form has been in keeping with his best, is sure to have a strong following. J. T. Jamieson also has Mithra engaged, and she, too, possesses a good chance. The elect of this pair may be favourite, with Owairaka and Queen Arch also in demand. Some speedy sprinters figure in the President’s Handicap, and backers will probably follow the good ones and go for Vallar, Kingfield, and Benzora. Latest form stamps Valuation as a good hack, and he will probably start favourite in the Berescourt Hack Handicap. .Maori Boy and Air King may also find solid support. The three-year-old Red Lion (Solferino—Rose Red), who cost Messrs J. C. and P. S. Gleeson 1000 guineas as a yearling, was shipped to Sydney by the Maunganui to-day. He is to go into M. M'Grath’s stable' at Randwick. Up to the present Red Lion has been, a complete failure, and he will do his racing on the other side in minor company. The imported horse Tidal, who has been in J. Jamieson’s stable, was also shipped by the Maunganui, and goes to G. Price at Randwick. Early in the season hopes were entertained that Tidal would i develop into R good handicap horse, but his latest form has been a good deal below expectations. • WAIKATO ACCEPTANCES.
