ASSAULTS TAXI DRIVER. SUBSTANTIAL FINE IMPOSED. (Special” to DjutT.'TncEsA • ■ WANGANUI,- April 26. A couple of .nights .ago-a. Hawaiian named Roberty M'Carthy, arranged with R. V, Lacy' to motor him'to Okoia. M'Carthy, it is alleged, was slightly under the influence of .liquor, and when;he ascertained he had been carried past his home he attempted, to get out.: - fie violently assaulted Lacy. The . latter broke. away, and ran to a house' for assistance,' but found the house was M'Carthy’s. There he was subjected to further assault. When charged with the offence - to-day M'Carthy ■said Ire had .supplied the.;car with .petrol - and had thought this, was sufficient pa>C ment. .The court, however, did not think so“and fined the accused £lO and costs, or one month’s imprisonment, t ; Constable MThtbsh .said that when he saw Lacy’he was yery-much shaken.
