While an outgoing train was travailin' 1 towards Otahuhu at 1,45 this afternoon it struck a motor car at the Southdown level crossing, smashing it against the cattle stop.' Mr Spence Atkinson, aged residing at One Tree Hill, the . driver of the car, was thrown out and fatally injured. The car, a light five-seater, was proceeding over the crossing in the direction of the Great South road, and Mr Atkinson slowed down. The engine stalled when the machine was across the rails. Mr Atkinson was thrown out, striking the stop with terrific force. An 'ambulance was summoned, but the injured mart died on his way to the Auckland Hospital. A FATAL FALL. James Lionel Worsdale died at the hospital as the result of severe burns received at the Coleridge power house on F”’day while cleaning electric cables. He was 41 years of age and married. BY MOTOR CAR. , A young girl named Betty Denton, "two and a-half years of age, whose .parents reside in 7 Ellis street, was .admitted to the Public Hospital at 2.30 "yesterday afternoon, as a result of being knocked down by a motor ear in King street in front of the Union Hat Factory. She was suffering from head injuries and died at 3.15. The inquest was opened at the Hospital at 4.30 p.m. before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., sitting as coroner. Sergeant Boulton represented the police. After evidence of identification had been taken, the inquest was adjourned until '.Monday.
