Thousands are The Mail Order Centre for Savings In a_ 29 years' march up the ladder of progress the two giant stores pictured here have grown from a tiny shop employing two salespeople—an astonishing growth that is the reward of serving the public with better values. As a result of the tremendous turnover and consequent great buying power, the stores have been able to reduce the cost of living for thousands of customers—in many instances goods being offered at wholesale rates. Scarcely a week passes but that some of the stores' departmental managers or buyers are on a tour of the northern markets in search of fashionable and first-quality merchandise at a lower price, and the savings thus obtained are immediately passed on to customers. The stores' European buying offices are situated in Golden Lane, London, where a staff of expert buyers is employed. In addition to this buying office, Mr J. W. Smith, the Managing Director of the firm, periodically makes a tour of European manufacturers, many of whom are now making lines exclusively for H. & J. Smith, Ltd., Invercargill and Gore. It has been truly said that “ no trail is too long or too hard for Smith’s buyers if there is a better value at tHe endl ” The stores also maintain a most up to-date drapery factory, wklck is situated on the second floor of the 1 overeat gill store, and there is a modern bedding factory in Esk Street, so that the firm are manufacturers as well as retailers, and’ customers therefore buy direct from these factories—-a considerable saving. As an instance of the size of the stocks the following statement is of interest: THAT MORE THAN HALF THE TOTAL OVERSEAS IMPORTATIONS INTO SOUTHLAND OF DRAPERY, CLOTHING. AND WEARING APPAREL OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS ENTERS THE DOORS OF THESE TWO BIG STORES. In common with modern and progressive European and American .stores, H. &. J. Smith, Ltd., employ no country travellers, realising that this considerable raving in expenses enables them to sell at lower prices. House to house selling has indeed been proved over and over again to be the most expensive method of merchandise distribution in the world. Instead, a big Mail Order Department is maintained in the two stores. This department in the Invercargill Store has a permanent staff of nine carefully trained shoppers and packers, but at busy times this number is often increased to twice as many. That the public appreciates this method of shopping is evidenced by the vast number of orders handled daily. It should be mentioned that the firm pays the postage on everything, with the exception of Millinery, Bedding, Crockery, and Heavy Furnishings. The stores are still growing. In the near future a large addition will be made to the Gore Store, and at the present moment the carpenters are engaged enlarging the Invercargill Store along Kelvin Street. When this addition is completed the store will have a ground floor space alone of 80,000 square feet. Beautifully appointed Tea Rooms are situated on the second floor in Invercargill, as well as Dressmaking and Men's Tailoring workrooms, while the ground floor contains Millinery and Apparel Alteration Rooms and a large House Furnishing workroom. Four Morris Cowley delivery vans are engaged delivering packages all day long. Almost daily there is some improvement in the service and the value-giving of these two big Southland stores —almost daily they-find something more they can do to make life easier, happier, more economical for those “around them.
