People who buy tortoises from street hawkers are warned by the R.S.P.C.A. that they are encouraging a trade which leads to an enormous amount of suffering. The men tempt people to buy with the' wrong information that the tortoises are useful for keeping down slugs, blackbeetles, and other garden pests. This is quite misleading, for tortoises are vegetarian, and eat only lettuce, cabbage dandelion, and other green foods. They also require water. Many people, thinking their tortoise is thriving on insects and. so on, to not provide any food at all, so that the unfortunate creatures are starved to death.
