SPEED OF MOTOR TRAFFIC.

AN INCREASE PREDICTED. SUPER-ELEVATION AT CORNERS SUGGESTED. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, February 14. An increase of at least 10 miles an hour in the speed of motor traffic during the next 10 years was forecasted at the half-yearly meeting of the North Island Alotor Union to-day by the Wanganui delegate (Air I. V. Wilson). ‘"Superelevation should be provided on the corners to carry heavy traffic up to 45 miles an hour,” said Air Wilson. Evidence of the modern tendency of motor construction to provide for safe travelling at ever increasing speeds was submitted in a report from the Wanganui Automobile Association). "The report suggested that super-elevation on the highway should be based on the margin of safety over and above what was considered would be the maximum speed motor vehicles would be likely to travel at in, say, 10 years’ time. The Wanganui Association denied that it was advocating a higher rate of speed, and stated that if a sufficient margin were not provided there was a tendency to make motorists hug the corner, which was a source of danger There was a possibility that on a greasy two-way corner a man travelling at a higher speed than the super-elevation provided for might skid and possibly collide with a motorist on the outside travelling at. a normal speed. A careful motorist was entitled to a larger margin of safety. It was decided to send a report to the Alain Highways Board.
