(Received Feb. 14, at 8 p.m.) Replying to questions in the House of Commons, Sir Austen Chamberlain (Foreign Secretary) said he had no official- information that the new Vatican State intended to apply for membership of the League of Nations, and it would be quite premature to state the attitude of the British Government, to. an event which was so absolutely hypothetical. He did not think he could pledge the Government not to take such action as it thought proper as a member of the League. Sir Austen Chamberlain was asked,-if it had not been made dear that the Pope was not seeking any association with the League, and he replied that he understood that that was so.
