Thursday, February 14.) (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) THEFT OF SHOES. Two young men- named Edwin Austin Irving and Joseph Francis Ward were charged with stealing a shoe horn, a jewellery box, and a pair of shoes, valued at 355, the property Esrae HanUey, and a pair of boots, vtiluud at 23s fid, the property of W. Harris and Sons, Ltd. —Both the accused, who were not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty. —Chief Detective Cameron stated that on Wednesday the men had gone to Hankey’s boarding house for a meal at mid-day, and while one went into the kitchen and conversed with the members of the household the other .went into Miss Hankey’s room and stole the articles mentioned, which they later sold to a second-hand dealer for 2s Cd. Later in the afternoon they were seen taking a pair of boots from Harris’s. They went down to -the Monument, where they rubbed the soles on the stonework. They were endeavouring to sell the boots when Constables Eoycroft and Johnston arrested them. Both men had records.—The accused stated that they had been drinking during the day. —They were sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be concurrent. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A young married woman, who was chargeed with having attempted to commit suicide, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. The evidence disclosed that her home life had been most unhappy, but she undertook to make no more attempts on her own life.
