There they were charged with appropriating: articles belonging to the bride’s foster mother. ■The foster mother stated That she haa brought up the girl since infancy. They never returned, but she heard later that the couple went to Gretna Green and were married. The magistrate : What 'was their -idea of going to Gretna Green to get married"/ The man: My wife’s foster mother would never have allowed us to get married. Did you go by rail? Yes, we went by excursion. ' .. The magistrate: There is no romance in this at all. You could have been married in Glasgow. Asked for the certificate of marriage, M’Dowall produced a slip of paper Bearing an- embossed reproduction of the famous blacksmith’s shop, at Gretna Green.
TJie magistrate then out the couple or probation for 12 months, and, expressing the hope that this would be a lesson to them, trusted that they would stand by each other through thick and thin.
