THE CHANNEL TUNNEL

LABOUR LEADER IN FAVOUR. SURPRISED AT OPPOSITION. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, February 12. Mr Ramsay MacDonald, who was Primp Minister in 1024, when the last effort was made to obtain Government sanction to the Channel tunnel revealed in an interview in the Daily Mail that it was not only the military considerations which the Committee of Imperial Defence then considered, tt was a carefully prepared economic memorandum which influenced the committee’s decision as much as the opinions, of the military representative.

Mr Ramsay MacDonald explained that, before calling on the Defence Committee, he asked the members of the Channel Tunnel Committee if they would continue to press for the tunnel if the military was opposed. They said no. wherefor the project was not pushed. It was absolutely untrue to say that he accepted the military objections. He personally always favoured the tunnel, and was, surprised to find that the Opposition was strong. He was prepared to participate in any reconsideration of the subject.— United Service.
