SPORTING.

. RACING NEWS. ( FIXTURES.; February 14, 16.—Dunedin Cup. February 14, 16.—Wanganui. February 16, 18.—Te Aroha. February 20, 21—Woodville. February 20,-21.—Gore. ' February 23.—C.J.C. February 27, -28.—Dannevirke. February ;28, March 2.—Marlborough, February 28.—Waiapu. March 8, 9. —Napier. March. 14.—Waimate meeting. March 16.—Oamaru meeting. By Sentinel. The weather was dull and overcast at Wingatui yesterday morning following a shower which’fell overnight. The rainfall merely cooled the ground and did not alter the state of the going, except on the which was a bit damp on top when training operations commenced. Paperchase set the ball rolling about 6 a.m. by galloping over six furlongs ,on the plough in Imin 18 2-ssee. She went well, enough, but in a manner suggesting that she is still short of a rousing gallop or two/ Full Feather and Starshooter were ridden out when covering the same ground in Imin. 1-7 4-'ssec. Full Feather seems a bit sour, but kept going under pressure. Prickles did a strong working gallop over nine furlongs in 2min 6 3-ssec. Pangolin, Court Jester, and Impertinence seemed to be the order of merit at the conclusion of a gallop over six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec. Sudden Storm sprinted half a mile along the back in 40sec. Beau Geste and Troilus went well when covering five furlongs in Imin 4 4-ssec.

Limerick cantered and then came over a final three furlongs in, 42sec without being hurried. The crack looks in excellent order, but perhaps sports a bigger middle-piece than usual. Aussie was treated to easy work.

Count Cavour and Amor cantered a circuit and then ran over sis furlongs in Imin 18 2-osec,

Nightmarch went at half pace to the five-furlong post, and then worked at a strong pace horiie in Imin 9sec, Rigmarole and Jaleux got through useful pace work.

Pink Coat and Money Mine put up a good gallop on the course by covering half a mile in 52aec.

Gold Tinge did steady pace work, with a short sprint home. He was afterwards worked on the lead.

Pink Note, on the course, had the assistance of Eaton Bells when galloping seven furlongs in Imin 35 3-osec. The Cup candidate went well and was always under a nice hold. Rin-Tin-Tin cantered once round. Umtali and Night Effort required 54 l-sseo to cover half a mile.

Waving Corn moved a, bit short when doing slow pace work. Royal Saxon went freely whilst covering seven furlongs in Imin 30 2-ssec. He was picked up by Arrowy at half a mile and ■ ran the last six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, and five in Imin ssec. The final half took a tick over 52sec.

Paquito ran over five furlongs in Imin 4sec.

Waterlow and Evening reeled off half a mile in 50sec.

Toawai, travelling a bit wide, cast six furlongs behind in Imin 18sec. Night Lad put up a smart sprint over three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Rapier and Nincompoop galloped six furlongs in Imin 17sec,- with the latter going well at the finish. Rotor went over six furlongs in Imin 17 2-osec without being fully extended. Star' Raid and Lancer kept together with the former running a bit wide when negotiating five furlongs in Imin 3 2-ssec. Silver Coot appeared to be stopping when.concluding half a mile in 52 3-ssec.

Amdrist and Heisler worked over sis furlongs in Imin 20 3-ssec. Shandre and Tunamoe were schooled over, two flights of : hurdles along the back. Shandre rapped the first jump, but made a good recovery. Tembroney, Stealth, Battle Flag, King Sol, Solma Salar, Blue Metal, Overhaul, Black Duke,. Ark Royal,; Royal Flower, Positive, Camisader, 'Rangataki, Francolin, Rqtorex, Killorna,. and a - few others got through unimportant tasks. ■ AH the work • with the exception of that named on the, course took, place on the , plpugh, which improved before the after-break-fast lot, headed by. Pink'Note; came on the track.

Aussie has set one or two “mains” for track work at Wingatui which will remain a standard for others to equal if possible.

Pink Note'and Royal Saxon have each undergone a good; sound preparation for their engagements- in the. Dunedin Cup. They are both bright .and well and will not be defeated through lack of racing condition.

Count Cavour. has been acting with plenty of dash in the fast work allotted him since arriving at Wingatui. Limerick, Aussie, and Rapier each look ready to go a good race in the Hazletr Gold Cup to be run on Saturday, Page Boy has latterly been moving with rather cramped action in his l work. Amongst the northern visitors to the Dunedin Cup are ,J. W. : Lowe and T. Allan, who were once associated with the late Mr H, Goodman’s stable when Forbury. Park was one of. the leading racing centres in the Dominion. ...

Carinthia has been turned out for a spell.

The New Zealand-bred 'Autobiography, a brother to Wayward and.Jaleux, won at the Western Australian Turf Club’s meeting held-on . January 26. , Catkin will form one of ,F.-D. Jones’s team, for Sydney.. ■ '

Waving Corn has been'galloping well in her . work,' but. yesterday morning she moved a bit’short in her slow paces. She may, however, go more - freely when running in-a race.

Stewards and' members of the, Masterton Racing Club have provided a handsome .gold cup, Valued at, 100 guineas, which henceforth w,ill be the principal trophy at the club’s meetings. Of the 15 horses offered for sale bn behalf of Mr “J. Baron ” recently, only three changed hands, and’of those three one was sold privately after being passed in. In the majority of-cases the reserve price was considered much too high, but the owner was adamant, and even the 2300 guineas offered for Marco March (Marchalong—Baroness Foote) did not induce him to sell. The would-be. purchaser of the colt, who finished second to Gold Tinge in the Breeders’ Plate at his only start,, was Mr C. B. Kellow, who perhaps had visions of getting hold of another Heroic. The reserve price was 3000 guineas. It was anticipated that there .would be spirited competition for Windbag’s two-year-old brother, Magnifico, who cost his owner 4000" guineas as a yearling, but again the price wanted was too high, and he was passed in without eliciting a bid.

DUNEDIN cup meeting. The Dunedin Cup meeting of ' 1029, which; wilt .'commence !to-day, ,promises to bo a more successful fixture than has been the case in recent years. The presence of such star performers as Limerick, Aussie, and Rapier on the scene has aroused much more than usual interest in the meeting, and their encounter bn the second day promises to-become a battle that will live in racing history. The'field, in the Dunedin Gup is very satisfactory from both a qualitative and numerical point of view, and without exception the horses will saddle up fit and 'well to repeat - or ■ excell some of the best, form displayed during their racing career. Count. Cavour would have the opposition at-his mercy if he could repeat or go near his, best .form, and it mav be worthy' of • note that Laughing Prince’had to be shaken -up to' heath him off as they came over the final furlong in the Canterbury, Cup.- Pink- Note has ,survived a searching preparation, and pn his best forni stands. an excellent change of repeating his success in last year’s race. •He is, however, up against stronger opposition this year; On Wellington form he should beat' Royal • Saxon and Papatu, but .the' two last-named. have trained on since they ran at Trentham last month. Nightparch reads close.to Pink Note with 61b to bridge the three years’ margin in their ages,, btit he haabeen on the improve since he won the New Zealand Derby. He ran at the Wellington Cup meeting, but was left in one race, and, badly placed in another, rso that.,his latest form is not a. reliable-.line.. he jtist failed to give Historic 41b over nine furlongs. an,d; he ’ may be said.'to .represent the latter on-Wellington form. If thatia so, Pink Note shbuld be- -able to ac-

count for- him on Historic’s form in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, when the former was unlucky to miss a win. Royal Saxon has done remarkably well, i and a horse could not do a sounder pre- I faration than the Saxby gelding has done. I n the Wellington: Clio and’ Wellington i Racing Club Handicap he pulled himself j to the front, and was left without a finish, j but, differently handled, he won well over , a mile on the final day. He was fifth, and not far away from the placed lot, in I the Wellington Cup, out it was one of the ! most unsatisfactory races the writer has ever seen. Pink Note beat him in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at 91b and Royal Saxon will have to be differently handled to turn the tables at lib more in his. favour over an extra furlong. Papatu ran' a good- third in the Well ington Cup, and has done well since his arrival-at Wingatui. Mr G. Paul, his owner, kindly informed the writer during conversation that the Romeo gelding is not a particularly good track horse, so that; his gallops, although good, do not fully represent his ohaucc when carrying the colours.- Beau Geste came into prominence by helping to pilot the field into the -straight omen running -in the New Zealand Cup, and whilst others were waiting in.behind him at Riccartouj he may do better over the shorter journey at Wingatui. He is, by the way, a brother to Scion, who ranks as a winner of the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup in the, same season. A repetition of Circulation’s gallop with Royal Saxon and Papatu over 10 furlongs strongly suggests that she represents danger, and ioth Rotor and Prickles should lend'interest and strength to the contest. The close of the betting may see Pink Note, Royal Saxon,, and Nightmarch as the order of favouritism. Aussie looks sure to start favourite for the Publicans’ Handicap. Paperchase would.be picked to trouble him seriously, but she seems a shade short of work. Rapier has been trained to race, and race successfully, over a journey;, but he may be able to gather speed from a flat-fo.ol start. It is, however, not forgottten that with S.lO up he pave Paperchase (then a three-year-old) 171 b and a head beating in the Cressy Handicap run and won over six furlongs in Imin 14sec at the New Zealand Cup meeting of 1926. Black Duke may not be quite forward - enough/ but he is commencing to go well in- his work. Nincompoop is Nincompoop—sometimes good, sometimes bad. Meadow Lark put up a smart performance at Wellington and ran Imin 13 3-ssec at the Dunedin summer meeting. He will be sure of plenty of friends. Rin Tin Tin looks ready to run a good race, and so does Sudden Storm, but she is inclined to dwell from a flat-foot start. Silver Coot dead-heated in last year’s race, but Dancing Days, although speedy, is not getting any younger. The order in which the public may pin its faith -null probably be: Aussie, Meadow Lark, and Paperchase. The Champagne Stakes promises to be a more interesting race than usual, and the order of selection may be Gold Tinge, Pink Coat, and Stealth.

The. minor events may see support accorded as follows;—Autumn Hurdles-r-Guncase, Troilus; Trial Stakes—Paquito, Stardancer; President’s Handicap—Toawai, Tardy, and Tembroney as a good outsider; Berwick Handicap—Star Raid, Cupid’s Dart; Stewards' Handicap—Full Feather, Waterlow, or Arrowy. The inside half of, the course at Wingatui will provide excellent going. It has a good sole of grass which has been carrying the moisture and will take the sting out of the ground.

By Sentihbi. Clonmel is .like many other trotters. He goes to a break when trying, to .act up to or. beat his handicap. Vestas raced very badly in the Liverpool Handicap, in which he was well backed. He failed to show speed at any stage of the. race, and. he was not persevered with over the last six furlongs. The Waimate sportsman, Mr J. Dench, has Just made a start with his three-year-old filly by Wrack from Tatsy Dillon. The filly has been ■ growing fast, so. her. breeder, has allowed her time to mature. ‘

Golden Author refused to leave the mark in his races at Forbury Park and m tlre_ Liverpool Handicap he also failed to begin. Golden Author, is a fast pacer, who looks as though he would go two miles,, but (says Atgus) until he has become solid at the barrier he is not likely to be mpch good .as a racing proposition. His sire. Author Dillon, arid 1 his dam, 0.1. C., were well mannered pacers. Christchurch .'reports state that Bonny Belmont, who was a hot favourite for'the Cashmere Handicap, was going easily in front with ■ about five furlongs' to go, when he broke badly.. The Australian trotter never seemed to settle down to'his work again, and he .was, a long way back at the end of the race. Bonny Belmont has not-.done much racing, so' far in the Dominion, and he will probably do a'good deal better after some more experience. Jolly Pet.has now become very bad a t the barrier, and he will require a 1 good deal of work to make him a good beginner. In most of his races of late he has resolutely , refused to go away. According to “ Argus,” Commander Bingen should race better than he has been doing of late. He js by Nelson Bingen from that good trotting mare Commander Bell. . In the Spreydon Handicap Commander' Bingen went away smartly, but broke up in the first furlong. He is very slow. m getting back, to bis gait, so the mistake cost him the chance he had in the ’ race. Coniraander Bingen will probably do a lot better with more racing. t P ‘?£ co > . w } lo now has charge of Mr J. K. MKenzie.s horses, will race Danny Boy -’and Flora Volo . at the Kaikoura I rotting Clubs meeting next week. The three-year-old Chef would have been required to register startling figures to have beaten Maiwhariti in the Lins' 00 ? Handicap at Addington (eavs the Nun). As it was the son of Rey de Oro registered a good performance in running third, and if he had got a better passage in the straight' ha would probably have landed a dividend for his numerous supporters. Chef is a fine stamp of threc-year-old, who ‘ should develop into a solid customer with age. As it was Chef had to step 2min 11 2-ssec for third berth on Saturday, which equalled the winner’s time, and an improvement of nearly •two seconds on his handicap. ...... Ahuriri is not regarded as a sprinter by Mr Paul, and this view appears, the correct one. In a mile and a-half race he is set to give away 42 yards, but 36 yards is 'his portion' in the Palmer Handicap, of-a mile anda-quarter, while Kohara- (says, an exchange) is reckoned to be equally good at both distances, and is handicapped on 36 yards behind, ' The Champion Handicap to be decided at Wellington on Saturday is to he run oyer a mile and a-half, rather an odd distance as high-class pacers’ races go these-days. Usually the distance is cither a mile and a-quartei" or two miles (says the Press), but it is, rather interesting to note that Mr George Paul has elected to regard. Prince Pointer as capable of going ',3.14 .(60 ygrds behind in' a 3.19 class), which is two seconds better than the race record of 3.16 held by Great Bingen and only a. second worse than the 3.13 made against time by Onyx. Possibly Prince Pointer is quite capable of the; performance; and it would be interesting .to know Just .where Mr Paul would have put Great Bingen had he been nominated., Incidentally, while Prince Pointer is set to give away 60‘ yards in a mile and a-h'alf, he is set' to give 66 yards to the. game horses' in a mile and a-quarteiv This confirms Mr Paul’s idea that Prince

Pointer is better suited to .a mile and a-quarter than any other distance. This view of things is hardly justified by results.

A writer in a southern sporting paper, who has quite evidently not attended any trotting fixtures in this province for some time (says the Auckland Sun), devotes some space in-praise of the general control of the sport; throughout the Dominion. His heroic effort to whitewash certain happenings, of which, apparently, he has no first-hand information, is ludicrous, but;his attempt at gallantry in this respect might have been more commendable had he refrained from an unwarranted attack upon the rank and file of patrons, and the vituperation levelled against northern sporting writers, who have been • drawing attention to certain affairs, not of an imaginary nature, but cold, hard facts, and referred to in the hope that closer attention, on the part of the authorities will result in remedial measures being taken that will eliminate mistakes and place the popular sport on a footing • that will - result in greater public confidence.- The .southern “ armchair critic,” following, no doubt, certain ’ instructions. should' .be charitable' enough to give his fellow writers credit for an endeavour to elevate further the standard of the sport and the long-suffering public credit for unbiased judgment.
