MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT.
QUESTION OF MOTOR TRAFFIC. CORRELATION WITH RAILWAYS. (Per United Press Association.) WANGANUI, February 13. Mr W. A. Veitch was asked to-day by a Herald reporter what the new portfolio of Minister of Transport implied. The Minister replied that he was not going to be so foolish as to proclaim a complete policy and system of organisation at this stage. Already misconceptions had arisen as to what the creation the new portfolio of transport implied, some having the impression that it was to be in the nature of a struggle for existence on the system of “ pull devil, pull beggar,” as between the railway and the motor transport services. As a matter of fact, the foremost feature of his work would be in exactly the opposite direction. It was not intended to continue the effort to force traffic on to the rails, but by the application of goodwill and common sense and without compulsion or unnecessary interference with the rights of people, he believed it was possible to correlate the motor traffic with the railways, so that both might serve the people better.
