The two famous “ twins ” of the London Guildhall, the giants Mog and Magog, appeared in the Lord Mavor’s Show last month. This is the first time for nearly 200 years that Gog and Magog were in the show. The actual Guildhall figures were not removed from their wonted places, but their parts were taken by men dressed and heightened by means of wickerwork and canvas, to make the “doubles” of the city giants. The present Guildhall figures were carved in 1708 and cost £TO. They arc lift Gin high. According to tradition, they represent not the Gog and Magog of the Hebrews, but two giants who were supposed to play a part in a mythical Trojan invasion of Britain. The same tradition declares that London was originally New Troy, and was a great city 1000 years before. Caesar’s expedition to Britain.
