(Received Dec. 14, at 1 a.m.) Admiral Hughes, chief of the navy operations, in his annual report, stated that Congress will act and provide for an enlisted naval personnel of 88,500 in the fiscal year 1930, not including allowances for nucleus crews or for the number required to commission the vessels waich. are now in course of construction.
The report complained that insufficient funds were provided during the past year adequately to man the vessels in commission.—Australian Press Association.
CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME. APPROPRIATIONS PASSED. WASHINGTON, December 13. (Received Dec. 14. at I a.m.) Appropriations of 3,800,000 dollars for naval construction were passed by the House of Representatives to-day, despite a protest by critics, chief of whom was Mr Laguardia, who stated that such legislation was inappropriate when the Government was making a gesture for universal peace. The sum of 2700 dollars was appropriated to complete two submarines, and the remainder is to complete Hie modernisation of the battleships Caluornia, Oklahoma, and Nevada.—Australian Press Association.
