SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Mr G. L. Denniston (chairman), Sir George Fenwick, Captain H. Fraser ‘and Messrs B. jp. Hazlett, W. Clarke and D, E. Theomin. ' The secretary of' the Otago branch of the British Sailors* Society wrote asking if the executive would give its usual support in the form of a vote of a sum of money, to assist in the work it was doing in the interests of seamen who frequent the port.—lt was decided to contribute £lO to the Sailors’ Society fund. The secretary of the Lyttelton Harbour Board wrote stating that the board regretted it could not make a grant to the society at the present time.—The letter was received.

Captain T, Atwood, the society’s Auckland. representative, wrote expressing his thanks for the contribution of £l2 forwarded for the relief of the crew of the' scow Herald. The crew of the Herald greatly appreciated the assistance given by the society, ' A letter was received from Captain T. Atwood, of Auckland, expressing appreciation for the society’s generous treatment of sufferers by shipwreck. The loss of the crew of the schooner Isabella de Fraine on Hokianga bar was. deplored. Two of the seamen were foreigners, and he had made inquiries whether they had any relatives dependant on them. The families of the other seamen were not in any particular want. He did not think there would be any request made to the Shipwreck Relief Society for any help. As the Auckland agent for the society, he appreciated the trust the executive placed in his discretion as to ■ the allocation 'of any money in cases of distress caused through shipwreck.— The chairman said it was very pleasing for the executive to know that it had' such a worthy representative as Captain, Atwood, and it was hoped that he would long continue to act in that. capacity.

The secretary reported that during the past quarter the sum of £244 Is 2d had been received as subscriptions from passengersrivho- travelled, by the Union Company’s mail steamers Aofangi, Niagara, Tahiti, Mahura, and Maunganui, the Island steamer Tofua, and the intercolonial steamers Marntnn and Maheno. The sum of £l2 was paid out during the quarter as relief to the crew of the scow Herald, wrecked near Auckland.
