Aow declarations of this sort are uuwarranted and mischievous, and reflect little credit on the hospitality and courtesy of our Northern Celts, I never yet heard any adverse criticism launched against persons wearinc the kilt in-any port Of Scotland; and I am certain that, in time cases out of ten, such an act is “s en . “x a compliment and a handsome xx*° orr 0 r r and discernment in the matter of clothes. I have often been in London and in other English towns .and cities, and am quite, satisfied that nobody among the many people I must have mot ever seemed to resent in the slightest measure my assumption of trousers, high-uppered boots, and a felt hat, although all these articles of wearing apparel are of undoubted Saxon origin. Let us be no less chivalrous and kindlv disposed than our neighbours and, in any case, let us not spoil the prospects of a branch of our tailoring trade which is absolutely proper and legitimate. I sub mit. with all deference to my friend, that an Englishman has the same right to wear tartan as I have to don Saxony tweed.
