MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meetihg of the Mosgiel Borough Council, held last night, was presided over by the Mayor (Mr J. P. Walk), and Cr s J. Garrett, J. Mitchell, L. S. Dyer. J. White, G. A. M'Leod, and John Wright were present., REPORTS. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the month had been £lO9 12s lOd, and recommended ■'for payment accounts amounting to £257 5s 3d. Picture theatre account: The summary of receipts for November was submitted, and accounts amounting to £7B 19s 9d submitted for payment.—The report was adopted. , The ranger reported that he had found one cow wandering during the month.— Received,

The Works Committee reported as follows Septic tanka: The receiving tanks had been thoroughly cleaned out twice during the month and all channels and troughs swept; everything was in good Working order. Drainage: Alterations had been made to the storm water drain ill Gladstone road, and five septic tanks discharging their effluent into the sump had now been diverted and run direct into the line of pipes discharging into the Owhiro Creek. Water supply: The dead ends in the borough. had been run off twice during the month, and all air and scour- valves had received the usual attention. The. missing:; air valves had .boon located 'and ,£Wo additional ones put on. Maintenance; The grader had been out twice on .Gladstone and -Quarry road, and this, road was now in! excellent order The 'street .corners of Factory, Gordon! and Bush roads had been grubbed to allow p. quick getaway for the water into the water, tables. A broken pipe culvert m Green street opposite Mr Ruthven’s had been repaired. The footpath in Fotfar street' from Tay street to Mr Souter’s prppmy had. been formed, and ashes were now being spread on it to complete it. The following, footpaths and water tables had been grubbed and cleaned i —Gordon" road, from Mnirhead’s to railway line fl Glasgow, Forfar, and -Lanark and Gladstone .road from : Elliot’s to Low’s ; ; The new water cart,had been out four days during the month in Gordon road during the recent dry weather,The repairing ,of asphalt footpath between Lanark street, and Bush road was how completed. The railway gates in; Green street .-and Turnstile had been shifted into their correct position, and the staff wan now awaiting the Railways Department to make up $e permanent way before being able , to'turn the traffic into -: the. centre of the road. Four ,of gravel; had been spread on Duke street footpath, two in Gladstone road, and two in Gordon road. The staff was now engaged in cleaning water tables and footpath in Park street, and intended to proceed with this work right through the Borough as weather permitted. Consequent upon a complaint of sewage discharging on to a property in Gladstone road, and running under a house, the inspector had made ah investigation of the surroundings and found that through defective -work on the part of the contractor the whole of the drainage from the two adjoining houses was discharging there. This necessitated the entire reconstruction of the drainage of this property, including a new septic tank. The whole of the new drainage had been subjected to the usual test and passed, and the nuisance was' now obviated. Leak in reservoir: There was siifl tme side of the reservoir to-be done to complete this work, but as a proof filial she work already done was satisfactoey there was at present no sign of leafage at the foot of the reservoir where it had always shown. When this last side was completed the inspector would mate an eshaustirejtcst over an extended period and. would report as to the result of the same. Three drainage jobs had been tested and passed, also two plumbing jobs. The New Zealand Railways Department, replying to a deputation from Mosgiel and Green Island in Connection with , alterations to suburban trains, advised that certain alterations would be broughtj into. operation from the 3rd inst.—The ‘letter was received.—lt was decided to draw the department’s attention to the fact that-the 6.50 p.nr. train should reach Dunedin at 7.18 p.m., not 7.23 p.m as stated in the letter.

Mr J. W. Mitchell, lata borough inspector, wrote regarding the water supply, which, he said, was a matter that had been the subject of correspondence between himself and the council during the year. He claimed that he had Improved the supply, and made a comparison between the flow into the reservoir at present and what was the supply about four years ago. He: also referred to the fact , that the council had carried out certain additions to the number of air valves on the pipe line and the finding of two that had been covered up prior to his visit over the pipe line with the council. He considered he had done-much towards an Improvement and asking for the promised remuneration qf £7 10s.—The Mayor and Crs Wright and Garrett were appointed to confer w-ith Mr Mitchell.
