CRIME IN ENGLAND
MURDER OF ELDERLY COUPLE. YOUNG MAN ARRESTED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, September 23. (Received Sept. 24, at 5.5 p.m.) In connection with the murder of the Kirbys, the police have arrested Charles William Conlin, aged 22, an ex-soldier, and a grandson of the murdered woman by her first marriage.—United Service. A previous message stated that, following the discovery of the shallowly buried bodies of an elderly couple Thomas and Mrs Kirby, of Old Thornaby Green, by Mrs Stead, of Norton, nea r Stockton-on-Tees, while seeking soil for her plants, the police were searching for a suspect with a motor car. Mrs Stead noticed a mound in a lonely lane with a wrist and a coat sleeve protruding, and she informed her son-in-law. The police exhumed the bodies. Kirby had been wounded in the head, and was still bleeding, while his wife had apparently been strangled. Her boot was discovered in an adjacent ditch. The police prevented hundreds of inquisitive people from flocking to the scene.
