TRENTHAM SCHOLARSHIPS.

REPORT ON FUNDS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 24. The Trentham Scholarship War Fund report shows that 287 applications for bursaries were received last year, compared with 228 the previous year. One hundred and forty-five were renewed, and 89 new awards granted, a total of £5025, and 53 were refused. Since then, mostly at the request of applicants, 17 grants, totalling £272 10s, have been cancelled. The excess of expenditure over income was £1539. After allowing for £2OOO contributed by the Canteen Fund, the assets in hand amounted to £28,935. Since the inception of the fund £27,275 has been paid out. The balance in hand is designed to last for 12 years, but this will to some extent depend on the contributions from the Canteen Fund, without whose generous assistance (the report says) it would be impossible to meet the ever-growing demand on the fund.
