November 3, a, 7, 10. —New Zealand Cup Mooting. By Sentinel. The plough track is again in use at Wingatui, and if the weather is at all favourable should work into good galloping order. The Kilbroncy gelding Happy Warrior, who has been off the scone for some time, is again in work at Wingatui. C. Dawson was in charge of Mr K, Acton-Adams’s team which was shipped to Western Australia on Thursday last. The shipment was made up of Cartoon. Tholomon, Honey, a two-year-old by Night. Raid —Miss Muriel, and a four-year-old by Tractor —Miss Muriel. F. Shaw recently saved the ancient Martian gelding Linden from destruction and is now using him to teach embryo Archers how to ride. The old chap is now 15 years old, and is still able to act as schoolmaster to young pilots. The course proper at Wingatui has. been treated to a light top-dressing, and a few falls of rain would help to improve the going for the Dunedin spring meeting. A. T). Webster is expected to return from Australia with First Acre and the rest of his team before the end ol the month. The Marble Arch mare Arch Lassie has produced a filly to Tea Tray. Arch Lassie is the dam of Young Lochiuvar. Solrose got through steady pacing at Wingatui yesterday, and seems to be quite sound again. She is a tine type of mare, and at the end of’her turf career should prove valuable for the stud.

The Solferino mart' Lava, owned by Mr J. M. Samson, will be bred (o Paper Money this season. This mating will supply a St. Simon cross on to Musket through Multiform and Trenton on flic Nightmare taproot, which supplied Midnight Sun, Xoetniform. Nightfall. Wakeful, and other first-class performers. Paper Money also brings in an infusion of Fager fsire of Gloaming's dami and also one of Sunshine, the best staying taproot in Australia or Now Zealand. The Sunshine line produced Martian. Positano, Limond, and Honifonn. If Lava produces to Paper Money, the result should be a rare combination of speed and stamina. The Acre gelding Consent, who beat a short-priced favourite in Episode in the Wanganui Guineas, started seven times as a two-year-old. He was unplaced in bis tirst two races and gained a win and places in his subsequent engagements, lie beat a big held in a maiden race at OtaLi, and at the Wellington winter meeting finished third to Toxeuma and Roscrea in the Trial Plate, and he afterwards ran second to Historic in the Novice Handi- j cap. As this form occurred right at the i back of the season. Consent could be considered fairly forward for early spring engagements. He was got by Acre from Lucky, by Luculhis from Lady Nivello. bv Soult —Merry Nif. by Merrv Hamilton. Aero was got by Linacre from Miss Arlington, by Multiform—Lady Arlington, by Grafton—Loch Lava, by Locbiel Lava, by Chester. Lueulliis is a St. Simon line horse through Aid Patrick, a Derbywinner. and there is also a further strain of St. Simon through Soult. Galopin, the sire of St. Simon, conies in through Grafton. so that Consent's pedigree represents a strong infusion of St. Simon with Hampton and the unbeaten Barealdine on top. Barealdine to-day has become a dominant line through Hurry On. So that w-hilst Consent was a modest performer in his first season, he should stayon as a three-year-old.

Fairway, the winner of the St. Logor. failed in the Derby, and the fact seemed to support the view that his sire. Phalaris, could not get a stayer. A St. Leger win is generally accepted as a better sign of stamina than a win in the Derby, and as Phalaris is a Sunshine horse lie "should get stayers.

The South Canterbury sportsman Mr A. F. Roberts, has bought the brood mares Jubilant and Tumult, for his Scadown stud. Jubilant, by Gay Lad from Judith. is_a half-sister to Palestrina, Jericho, and Wink. She was a winner of several races, including the Brackenlield Handicap, one mile and a-quarter. Tumult, by Nantiform from Shindy, is closely related to Medley, the dam of Ballymena, Limerick, and Roscrea. and to Waterspray, the dam of Pilliew inkie, Sprinkler, and Arikiwai, the three mares bejng descended from the Apremont mare Nenuphar, whose dam, Watersprite, was by Tradueer from Waterwitch, by Camden from Mermaid. The most valuable two-year-old race run in England is the Sandown National Breeders’ Produce Stakes. The added motley is £IOOO, but (says an exchange' though there were only 13 starters this year, owners’ forfeits were so heavy that the owner of the winner received £6802, in addition to which there yeas £3OO for its breeder. Owner and breeder of (he second horse got £2OO each, and of the third horse £IOO each.

The winner, Tiffin (Tetraterna —Dawuwind, by Sunstar), who had stored at her only previous start, was well backed, and beat the favourite, Mr Jinks, by two lengths. Sir John Rutherford sold Tiffin as a foal to Lord Ellesmere for HOOgns, and her dam to Lord Dewar for oOOOgns. Bpear Dance, the five-year-old horse, by Spearmint from Lady Star, bought in England by Mr J. Pohlen, of Matamata, who arrived in Auckland this week, is referred to as “ an attractive son of the Carbine line.” Mr Pohlen secured Spear Dance at 400gns, at which figure he must be regarded as a bargain. Spear Dance is expected to reach Auckland at an early date. Though bought ostensibly for the stud, it is quite on the cards (says “Phaeton”) that Spear Dance may be given an opportunity of earning distinction on the turf in Auckland before taking up stud duties. Sp'-r.r Dance’s best performance in the Old Country was registered at Doncaster in May, 1927, when he won the Portland Welter Handicap, the distance of which extended to a mile and three furlongs, and in which race he carried 8.1. Teams of racehorses on visits to Australia from New Zealand are by no means uncommon nowadays (says a Melbourne writer). It was not so when "Ready Money ” Robinson, as a well-known owner of the day was called, sent across the Tasman a lot of nice-looking thoroughbreds, mostly good performers. They ■were Vanguard, Liverpool, Oudeis, Thunderbolt, and Winchester. That was in the middle ’eighties. The enterprise, which turned out badly, was recalled at Caulfield when Sir Alogy won the Australian Hurdle and Lanage the Moondah Steeple. The name of Thunderbolt appears in the pedigree of Sir Alogy, while Lanage owes something to Vanguard. Most of the horses mentioned remained in Australia, but Vanguard returned to New Zealand, where at the stud he begot Advance, the sire of Advantage. Lanage's dam. Thunderbolt found his way to South Australia, where he did well as a sire, and Oudeis went to the Mnrrumbidgee district, where he also earned fame at the stud. It must have been a very expensive trip for the man who financed it. A good deal of " ready money ” was swallowed up in the venture, with little or no return, except from the sales of the horses that were left behind. The principal jockey accompanying the team was " Bob ” Dcrritt, who. in length of service in the saddle, rivalled even Hales and Lewis. Derritt must have reached the half-century before finally sending in his jacket. Since the Robinson failure the New Zcalauders have got their own back in Australia, and it would seem that more success awaits them. Derritt was never fortunate iu the Commonwealth country, though he

steered no end of winners in his own land. Little was seen of him in Australia after his defeat on Carbine in the V.R.C. Derby, when Halos, on Resign, aieounted for him. He was a likeable little chap, and at his best a most capable horseman.

The Now Zealand-bred gelding Whaknku, by Great Audubon from a General Mae mare, won the Nedlands Handicap at Perth late last month. Whakuku was also a winner at the preceding meeting in Perth. Mr F. Pawson, business agent of the New Zealand railways, attended a meeting of the Canterbury Owners and Breeders’ Association held on Wednesday. and fully discussed matters in connection with the carriage of horses by rail, and assured members that, his department was prepared to facilitate the carriage of horses to meetings in every way. Tile chairman the railway oflieial for his attendance and (he interest he was taking in the doings of the association.

Queen's Own has not been required to do a great deal of fast work since she ran at the Grand National meeting, but is in tine trim for tuning up again when required to race. An Auckland paper is responsible for the statement that I). Bennett may accept an appointment as private trainer in Auckland. If negotiations end satisfactorily the Addington mentor will leave for the north before the end of Ibis neck, and will have a useful team to work.

Mangoutu, Jack Potts, Auditress, Real Light. Bonny Prince. Talent, Orphan. Vnnng Carbine, Florric Pointer. Merry Bingen. Golden Bubbles. Jean M'Klwyu. RoHo, Mate o’ .Mine, Little Author, Mercury, Black Admiral, Sarsaparilla have been sbiped north to fulfil engagements at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting. Guy Denver, by Guy Parish- -Leila Denver. will represent J. X. Clarke's stable in this year's Derby Stakes, lie is just the out of a youngster to uphold the prestige of any stable. Guy .Denver started unsuccessfully in last season’s Xew Zealand Sapling Stakes, in which Sonoma Child, Grandlight, and Wrackler filled the places, but (says the Sun) ho is a very different gelding to-day, and is a very sensible three-year-old. Another aspirant for (lassie honours is Roseworthy, a neat little daughter of Guy Parrish and Rosechild. All going well. Clarke hopes to play a prominent part in the Trotting Stakes at Forhury Park late in the season with Rosovvorthy. -who is owned by a Wellington sportsman. Mr M. Xeilsun.

The three-year-old pacer Royal Wrack, who had been showing some promise in bis work, is reported to have met with an accident the other day, and. ns a consequence, has had to be stopped in his work. While being exercised on Mr H. F. XT' colls track the youngster became frightened, tipi*d his driver out of the sulky, jumped a fence, and was eventualiv caught some three miles away. Ho was'not badly hurt, but a severe cut on a log will necessitate easy work for a time. All going well in the meantime, however, he Will probably accompany Wrackler to Auckland in quest of the Great Northern Derby. Wrackler, by the way, is doing everything asked of him in his usual workmanlike style. At a meeting of the board of the X_ew Zealand Trotting Association, held uu Friday last, an application to attend meetings during the term of his_ suspension for two months was received from James Bryce. The application was granted, tint board being guided by rule 351, which gives the hoard power to allow a suspended person to attend a racecourse during the term of his suspension by the association. The board, however (says the Press), apparently failed to notice that the suspension of Bryce was made by the appeal judges of the conference, and it. really had no power in any wav to alter such a finding. Rule 28 of the New Zealand Rules of Trotting states: " Tinappeal judges may conduct the proceedings, and hear the appeal in such manner as” thev think fit, and they may affirm or reverse the decision appealed against . and no disqualification, fine, or penalty, so affirmed or imposed by the appeal judges shall be removed or remitted. either wholly or in pdrt, otherwise. than by a resolution of Hie conference or by a decision of judges who may be appointed by the president on the request of the conference for a reconsideration of the decision inflicting such j disqualification . . . etc.'’ Bryce, who has a number of horses engaged at the Wellington meeting, will, in consequence, not be permitted to attend the Ijture.

DUNEDIN' SPRING MEETING

Quality and quantity aie particularly well represented in the nominations for the Dunedin .spring meeting. Some of the best burses in (raining hare been engaged, and the list includes many of those with important engagements. This lot includes Rapier. Count favour. Footfall. Sid, Sail. Celerity 11. Pink Note. Countersign, in the principal handicaps, and a very pleasing strength of quality has been attracted by the spring events. It would make a record meeting if the cream of both the events could be attracted to the starting post. What seems to be a record entry for a two-year-old race at Wingatui has been engaged in the Dominion Handicap, and the fact seems to assure an unusually good field in the M'Loau Slakes. The nominations also indicate a good tield for the Dunedin Cnineas, and with such excellent prospects indicated by the nominations a record spring meeting seems to be assured. t'arinthia. Pilaster. Wreath of Myrtle, Town Hank. \ award. Money Mine, Red da//. Wine Tray. Solmnri, and Solmar are amongst Mr .1. M. Samson's nominations for Hie Dunedin spring meeting. He. has also several horses engaged in Hie M’Lean Stakes and Dunedin Cnineas, for which a forfeit has to be declared on October a. This seems to be a record nomination by one owner for a Dunedin meeting. It. is interesting to note that several of the top-weights in the New Zealand Cup have been engaged at the Dunedin spring meeting.
