The colt popularly ticked off to wind up the leading two-year-old of the season in England this year is a youngster rejoicing in the name of Mr Jinks. In selecting the title in question for his colt Major M'Calmont was probably prompted by the incident in the Parliament of the Irish Free State some three years back, when Mr Jinks, one of the members, was out of the way when the fateful division was taken. Tbe Metropolitan Club’s meeting will be continued to-day. , __ .. Peterwah won the August Handicap brilliantly, and will certainly not be one of the outsiders to-day. For a neck defeat Daphne de Oro is allowed 12yds and on the difference she appears to hold the trotter safe; in fact, she is entitled to be favourite, with Queen's Own and Jewel Pointer next in demand. . The Speedway Handicap field contains some smart sprinters, and the pace will he on all the way. The fact that W estern King lost about 24 yards at the start of the International Handicap on Saturday- and then gathered the leaders to win brilliantly will probably be reflected in the wagering to the extent of making the North Island pacer favourite. He will be coupled with Jewel Pointer. Of the others Peter Bingen and St. Maura look the most likely to be promin-ent-in the run home. Sister Beatrice trotted such a fane race to finish second to Kenipton on Saturday, that she is certain to be supported in the Avon Handicap to-day. Kefrwood Bell and Bonny Spec look the best of those near the front. . Auditress did not hit her straps at the start of her race on Saturday, and so disappointed the stable. She looks well placed on the front of the Lincoln Handicap to-day. Free Advice and Kotuku Jack may be the hardest horses for her to beat. . . Native Prince won so impressively on Saturday that backers are not likely to look further for the favourite in the Canterbury Handicap to-day. King Pointer and Fight Ever will probably be next in order of favouritism. If Kingscraft had been started on Saturday he would have been a sound favourite, and there is little doubt that he will be accorded that honour in the Belgium Handicap to-day. Sarclla will be improved by her race on the first day, but Pageant looks more likely than she does to trouble Kingscraft. The field for the Dash Handicap is not a strong one. and some of the runncrs will be showing long prices. Tommy Direct stood on the mark on Saturday, but his supporters will be prepared to give him another chance to show his speed. He will, however, require to pull out his best gait to finish in front of King Pointer and Loch Moigh. Jewel Pointer touched a very tight clip to finish fourth in the August Handicap on Saturday, and there is no doubt that he is right on tbe top of his form. The tight class attached to the big race on the final day of the meeting will sec him well placed. Orphan paced a sound race to finish third in the Selwyn Handicap on Saturday, and he looks like winning good races before the season is much older. Nelson M'Kinney touched 3.28 2-5 in the Introductory Handicap on Saturday after having put in a break and consequently many will give him a chance from 3.30 in the Improvers’ Handicap. Queen’s Own went 4.22 4-5 in the August Handicap on Saturday to finish third, and so must be regarded as nicely trcated on 4.25 in the King George Handicap. ... , Talent is best suited by a short course. When at his best the New Brighton pacer is brilliant up to a mile and a-half. He paced a sound race in the International Handicap on Saturday. The Waimate-owned pacer Macaranda paced a fine race in the Queen Mary Handicap on Saturday. He was always with the leaders and finished on well. He goes particularly well when the going is heavy.

WILTSHIRE’S DEcisiVE WIN. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY NUKUMAT. (From Our Special Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 14. The Grand National meeting opened in cold and dull weather following a misty rain which had set in overnight. Drizzling rain set in as the first field on the card went into the birdcage, but it cleared, and, beyond another mild shower, the rest of the day remained fine, but wintry. A bad light prevailed when the Winter Cup field lined up at the post, but the card concluded without the threat of rain being carried into fulfilment. There was a large attendance which, as usual, included visitors from all parts of the Dominion. The track was rather on the slow side, but provided good going. Beau Cavalier attempted to win the Grand National Steeplechase from end to end, but his weight stopped him in the last half-mile. Apart from a risk at Cutts's the first time, he jumped in brilliant style. Wiltshire jumped a bit big at times and pecked when landing over a couple of fences, but otherwise gave a splendid display for a horse making his first attempt at the Riccarton country. The field was in good line when the

banner rose for the start of the Winter Cup, but First Sight backed out just at the breakaway, and so wrecked what must have been a really first-class chance of success. In fact, judging by the vast amount of ground he had to make up in order to finish fairly close to the placed lot. he would have been next door to a certainty had he got away on equal terms. He has, however, always been a bit troublesome at the barrier. Kotor ran a really good race after being slow to move at the start.

The pool on the Grand National Steeples amounted to £7435, and on the Winter Cup to £12,001 10s. Chrissarto and Prompter were struck out of the Hunters’ Hurdles, and a field of nine faced the starter. Despite his load of 12.9, Loughrea was at once taken to the front and led over the stand hurdle with Goldtown. Diana’s Lad then joined Loughrea as they went to the next hurdle, and they had opened a six lengths’ lead at the mile post, where Loughrea made a faulty jump, and again at the six, where Homemade came down. Diana’s Lad led round to the top, where Loughrea had dropped back. Diana’s Lad led into the straight, where Rangi Sarto, who was a long • way back .in the early stages, had moved up and joined the bunch following the leader. Diana’s Lad led oyer the last fence, and, coming .on, won nicely by a couple of lengths from Rangi Sarto, who stalled off Umtali and beat him by a long neck for second place. Goldtown was about six lengths away fourth, with Loughrea next. Kempsey fell at the last hurdle. The winner followed up his success at the Christchurch Hunt meeting, and showed improved form, as he won better than he did on that occasion. Loughrea, Panorama, Standard, and Piccaninny were withdrawn from the Trial Hurdles, in which most of the money came for Nine of Spades, Quincoma, and Nucleus. Craigmore and Amorist led over the stand hurdles, where Erin-go-bragh,' Steel Bar, and Carinthiu made faulty jumps. After leaving the straight Craigmore went on and opened up about an eight lengths lead from Amorist, as they raced along the back, with Nucleus next in a strungout field. Craigmore was still well clear at the far turn and on rounding the top, but turning for home Amorist and Nucleus were closing on the leader. Nucleus had joined Craigmore at the last hurdle, and Lady Passenger was close up. Once over. Nucleus came on and won by a ■mod four lengths from Craigmore, who punishing finish beat Lady Passeuger hy a head. Nine of -Spades finished a fair fourtji, and Amorist was next. Too much use was made of Craigmore, and he would have been closer to the winner if he had been more patiently handled. Still, Nucleus won well, and with something in hand. Smithereens, Despot, and Bon Raid were struck out of the Cashmere Plate. Backers went strongly for Malmsey, and next in demand came Sarnia. They got away from a good line, and the first to show were First Raid, Roi de Val, The Viscount, and Pfloscl, who was wide out on the extreme edge of the field. First Raid and Roi dc Val led Sarnia to the straight, where Noteworthy, Malmsey, The Viscount, and Starshooter were handy. Inside the distance Noteworthy joined the leaders, and Malmsey waa close up. A good finish saw Noteworthy beat Starshooter by a neck. Malmsey was half a length off fourth, and Sarnia and Narrative were right up with the third horse. Tarleton was withdrawn from the Jumpers' Flat, and Atareria went out a well-backed favourite. Brigadier Bill, Lady Gay, and Scion went out to the lead, and racing past the 10-furlong post had opened up a good gap from the rest of the field. Brigadier Bill was travelling well as he led Lady Gay and Scion along the back, where Gaze was running last. Thev closed on the leaders as they rounded the top, where Nukumai and Gaze were at the tail of the field. Brigadier Bill was still in charge at the distance, but a little later Nukumai appeared on the rails, and Gaze on the outside. Nukumai and Gaze came away, and the latter appeared to be a winner 100 yards from the post, but the top weight, making a game response to a final and well-timed call, got up and won by a long head.' Lady Gay was neany four lengths away, just in front ot Uiickwheat. The meritorious win was receiver, with rounds of applause, and it marked the third occasion on which Nukumai has won this race. His success will bring him into favour for the Grand National Hurdles. , Matu was struck out of the Grand National Steeples owing to developing lameness. Beau Cavalier, who looked in excellent order, went out favourite, and the best conditioned of the others were Tuki, Pouri and Wiltshire. When sent on the journey Beau Cavalier took charge and led Wiltshire, Tuki and Dubious over the first fence and stand double. Beau Cavalier was about 10 lengths in front of Wiltshire when going to Cutts s, and then came Tuki and Dubious. The field crossed safely and Beau Cavalier led along the back, with the others in the order named, whilst Passin’ Through had already dropped back to a hopeless position. Beau Cavalier was still well clear over the kennels double, where Tuki struck heavily at the second, but Ellis remained on top. The top weight continued to pilot the way in to the straight, with Wiltshire, Tuki, Dubious and Pouri following. So they went over the stand double, where Pamplona was up with Dubious and Pouri. They all safely negotiated Cutts’s fence, hut at the mile post Pamplona was pulled up lame. Beau Cavalier was racing about half a dozen lengths in front of Wiltshire at the kennels double, with Tuki, Pouri and Dubious in close order several lengths away. Racing to the next fence Wiltshire went up to Beau Cavalier and led him over the jump, and Pouri was also improving his position. Wiltshire led over the second last fence from Beau Cavalier and Pouri, with Tuki saving ground as he cut the corner to do the last jump. Wiltshire was over six lengths in front at the last fence, and coming on, he won by 10 lengths from Pouri, who beat Tuki by eight lengths. Beau Cavalier was another three lengths away fourth, and Dubious was about another dozen lengths further back. The others did not complete the course. Pouri was not ridden right out when the pursuit of Wiltshire became hopelqgs and second place was in safe keeping. Tuki ran a good race, but a bad jump, in which he carried away part of the second fence at the kennels double, took a lot of the steel out of him. Beau Cavalier put up an excellent performance, but weight told its tale at the finish. Wiltshire won in fine style, and did remarkably well, as he is only a young six-year-old, and not so well seasoned as some of the others. He is not a big horse, but well put together, and it is interesting to note that he was got by Day Comet, who has also sired a winner of the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase in Double Chance. He had too much speed for the rest of the field, of whom Pouri appeared to hold a chance when moving up as they came round the home turn. The time put up was comparatively good, as the misty rain which fell overnight made the going a bit slow, although A very suitable for u cross-country race.

Rang! Sarto had the pen put through liis name for the Enfield Steeples, in which Jovial and Royal Wink led Radiate over the first fence and stand double. This trio had drawn well clear at Cutts’s fence, where Rediate came down, but was remounted. Jovial led Royal Wink by bait a dozen lengths along the back, and they were racing right away from Royal Fashion, who came next. The two leaders crossed the kennels double safely, but Donation refused at the next, when bis case was hopeless. Royal Wink closed up a bit on Jovial at the second last fence, but fell and brought down Royal Fashion. This left Jovial to come home at h:s leisure. Captain Sarto came along and got second place from the remounted Royal Fashion, and Radiate also completed the course.

All on the card went out for the Winter Cup, and the draw for positions at the barrier was as follows;—Black Mint S, Royal Game 12, Taboo 17, Royal Damon 4, Solferite (5. Kaiti 16. Nincompoop 7, Town Bank 10, Bisox 9, Panther 19, First Sight a, Gold Mint 11, Chelone 2, Rotor 18, Don Jose 15, Miss Winkie 3. Antrim Boy 1, Teri 14, Kales 21, Royal Saxon 20, and Amor 13. After some little delay at the post, in which Nincompoop, Gold Mint, and First Sight gave a bit of trouble, the field got away, except those named, who were hopelessly loft. Rotor was also slow to move. Chelone, Teri, Kaiti, Royal Game, Amor, Kalos, and Panther were first to show out, and Royal Saxon soon joined the leaders. Chelone and Royal Saxon Jed Teri, Kaiti, Royal Game, Kalos, and Panther round the top, and the two first-named were still in charge as they straightened for home. Kaiti then joined the leaders at the false rail, where Rotor, Bisox, and Don Jose were drawing up. Inside the distance Kaiti looked a winner, but Rotor and Bisox put in strong challenges. Bisox stayed on best, and in a hard, fighting finish beat Kaiti by a head.

Rotor was a neck away, and Royal Game was next. Then, close up, came Royal Saxon, Town Bank. Tori, First Sight, and Black Mint. Both First Sight and Rotoi were unlucky in not getting well away at the rise of the barrier. Vigilance and Dollar Princess were taken out of the, Avonhead Handicap. Pangolin, on the rails, and Page Boy, from fourth place, quickly became prominent from Tripaway, who began from fifteenth position. The two first-named showed the way to Tripaway and Lancer round the top and into the straight. Here Historic and later Royal Lineage were closing on the leaders. Once inside the distance, Pangolin was clear of Tripaway, and the former came on to win by two lengths. Historic put in a claim and wore down Tripaway to beat her by a long head. Royal Lineage was close up fourtn, and Smithereens was next. The winner scored rather comfortably after being one of the pacemakers all the way. Historic and Royal Lineage were both finishing on well and will bo better served by a longer, journey. HANDICAPS FOR SECOND DAY. (Pee United Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 14.
